PUSH-UP CHALLENGE

1 - 23 June 2023

Wyndham Staff & Students Pushing for better Mental Health

Throughout the month of June, Wyndham College’s answer to the ‘The Avengers’ have

combined to tackle one of society’s most threatening adversaries - Mental Illness.

With our very own Tony Stark (Chris Minol), Captain America (Dimitri Papanis), Hulk (Nathan Hulands – you wouldn’t like him when he’s angry!), Natasha Romanoff (Rachel Kelso), Wanda Maximoff (Mel Rielly), Thor (Daniel Repeti) and a variety of other notable superheros, a Wyndham College community consisting of 56 staff, students and parents have combined efforts to take up the challenge and complete 3,144 push ups in 23 days.

The aim is simple, raise as much awareness around mental illness and mental health as possible and push back against concerning statistics such as:

- Around 1 million Australian’s currently live with depression.

- 40% of young people aged 16-24 are currently experiencing mental illness.

- In 2021- 3,144 Australians aged 15-44 were lost to suicide.

- Suicide is the leading cause of death in young people aged 15-24.

- Mental Illness (including anxiety and depression) is the leading cause of disease burden in young Australians aged 15-24.

With a little over a week to go, our community has completed a collective total of over 74,000 push ups and has managed to raise $3,000 to donate to The Push-Up Challenge, which will go towards funding promotions and initiatives around engaging, educating and empowering individuals and communities to experience better mental health outcomes.
