HRIS Basketball

There were mixed results at the HRIS Basketball Gala Day in Newcastle last week.

The Calrossy Opens girls' basketball team were exceptional,  achieving the highest-ever finish in the tournament for a Calrossy team.

Led by Hannah Hurley and Emma Rumble, the team were dominant in the pool matches, leaving a trail of defeated rivals in their wake. Emma and Hannah displayed outstanding leadership, contributing to the team's success through proficient scoring and formidable defence in each game.

The commendable defensive skills exhibited by Jess Golland and Darcie Kelly played a pivotal role in Calrossy's triumph, consistently turning the tide in their favour. The valuable contributions from Olivia Osland, Stella Moore, and Molly Carey further strengthened the team, enabling them to progress deep into the finals.

Despite experiencing a defeat in the Semi Final, the girls showcased their resilience by bouncing back in a courageous playoff game where they came tantalisingly close to victory, narrowly missing out on a win. This remarkable achievement secures a 4th place finish, marking the best result ever attained by a Calrossy girls' basketball team at HRIS.

On the boys' side, narrow defeats in the pool games against strong opponents relegated the boys to the lower half of the playoff draw.

Throughout the tournament, Harrison Barton once again demonstrated his unstoppable play, making a compelling case for the title of the HRIS association's best player.

Year 12 students Charlie Carter and Ryan Stewart brought scoring prowess and intensity to the games, while Max Thompson and Wilson O'Rourke showed tenacity and determination on defence, facing off against physically larger opponents. Harry Russ consistently made a significant impact on both ends of the court, delivering exceptional offensive and defensive plays in every game. Unfortunately, Bryn Heywood was unable to participate due to a shoulder injury but provided support to the team throughout the day.

Congratulations to both teams, and particularly to the girls' team for their outstanding achievement!

Importantly the success of the event has cemented its place in the Calrossy calendar to acknowledge the achievements of our athletes for many years to come.

We are thankful for the generous support of our event sponsors Tamworth Rugby Club, Collins Brothers, Bath Stewart and Associates, Financial Map, Brosie Martin Barnett, iPlumb Tamworth, Higgins Coasting Australia, Hutcheon and Pearce, Davidson Cameron and Co.
