New Secondary Reporting

As we approach the time when Semester 1 School Reports will be released, this email is intended to remind and provide further clarity on the changes we have brought in to feedback and reporting in the Secondary School.

The key change from previously is that teachers are providing more frequent feedback to students, which is visible to parents, via The Hub. Because of this, the formal school reports are more of a summary of grades or marks and the student’s approach to learning.

How do parents see teacher feedback on the Hub?

In short, parents log onto The Hub, click on their child’s profile and scroll down to see in one place the feedback for each course to date.

Individual feedback is also alerted to parents when it is released via notifications which parents can customise on The Hub.

What is different in the new Semester Reports?

Below are mock-ups (ie. pretend students) of a Year 7-10 report and a Year 11/12 report. There is a comment from the student’s Mentor Teacher, marks (for Year 11 & 12) or grades (for Years 7-10), indications of where the student is placed relative to other students and teacher observations of the student’s approach to learning. On the second/back page of the report is the rubric used for the approaches to learning. There is no longer a comment for each course due to the more frequent feedback available on The Hub, which is intended to be more beneficial to students’ learning at the relevant time.

Are interim reports still issued?

No. These were more fitting when the first written feedback received by parents was at the end of Semester 1. Now that feedback can be seen throughout the semester, the interim report is not necessary.

What about a student’s co-curricular involvement?

For some students, co-curricular involvement is small, while for others it is very significant. Some Year 12 students have been very involved over their time at school, even if cutting back in their senior years to concentrate on their studies.

To provide a fuller picture of this aspect of a student’s time at the school, we are commencing a cumulative co-curricular report which lists more than just involvement in the current calendar year or semester. This will be released to the Parent Portal, accompanied by an email to parents, not necessarily at the same time as the student’s Semester Report. For most year groups, the cumulative record will commence from 2023.

How will Boarding Reports be received?

Boarding Reports will be largely unchanged from previous practices. These too will be released to parents via the portal, accompanied by an email.  Again, these will not necessarily be at the same time as Semester Reports.

How do parents access the Semester Reports for their child(ren)?

Reports are accessed via the Parent Portal. They remain there, meaning parents can view/print past reports whenever they wish. As reports are released to the portal, parents receive an email. If any parents do not know how to access the portal via the Hub, they may phone our IT department on 5776 5200 or email itsupport@calrossy.nsw.edu.au

Will this be enough for Year 12 students applying for jobs, universities, colleges, etc?

In addition to Semester Reports (most recent and previous) which can be used for applications, each Year 12 student will receive a reference written by one of the school staff. This is co-ordinated via the Head of Senior Secondary office.

The references will be available in July/August and a hard copy will be in graduating students’ portfolios. Feedback received from tertiary institutions is that the report/reference combination (possibly with co-curricular and Boarding reports) provides the information required in a form appreciated by those who process applications.
