YEAR 8 OES TACKLE THE RAPIDS

By Andrew Lockrey (Secondary Teacher)

The Year 8 Outdoor Education classes recently went on a White Water Rafting trip. After gearing up in wetsuits, woollen socks, spray jackets and helmets we were greeted with our inflatable kayaks for two. We then did some brief skills work before hitting the water. Many of us struggled to keep the boats moving straight down the river.

We hit a number of rapids along the journey towards the Warrandyte Bridge, with the instructors challenging many of us to learn how to paddle across the rapids safely. For the most part we were all able to stay (relatively) dry in our boats.

It was a day well enjoyed, and we really welcomed a good bite to eat afterwards, it was quite tiring!

Special thanks to the bus drivers and teachers who helped on the day, Francis Best, Tiarna Mottrom and Sarah Sweeney.

ROADSMART: ROAD SAFETY AWARENESS IN YEAR 10 STUDENTS

By The Careers Team

Our Year 10’s took part in the Victorian Road to Zero - RoadSmart Interactive Incursion on Friday. It was a great day that consisted of 6 stations - designed to create awareness of road safety in a fun and interactive way. We all use our roads in some form every day, whether it's walking, cycling and/or driving. Each station provided its own unique animated awareness in 10 minutes.

We looked at how to create safer roads, safer behaviours and global road safety. The two favourite stations were probably the Vehicle Crash Lab and the VR that took us back to the past and drove us into the future.

We all have a role to play in contributing to a healthier and safer school community through improved road safety and this incursion certainly gave the students valuable knowledge of their role in this area.

ADF INSIGHTS: INSPIRING YEAR 11 AND 12 STUDENTS FOR FUTURE CAREERS

By The Careers Team

Our Year 11 and 12 students had the opportunity to hear from ADF Personnel, Captain Rupert Vicary and Corporal Tyson Houston when they visited our school last Friday.  They told of their own experiences in the Airforce and Army as well as all the different ways you can join the ADF, including via the GAP Year Program or as a Reservist.  Students learned about the various benefits of working for the ADF and how they fund all your training and provide career progression opportunities.
