Our Father

BY  NATHAN THATCHER ( Bus Program Coordinator)

Recently I had the pleasure of welcoming my beautiful baby boy Gideon into the world.

This really got me thinking about how big the prospect of becoming a father is, and what that looks like. I found comfort in the fact that as Christians, we have the ultimate Father to look to for guidance.

Whether or not we are fathers, or whether we aren’t, we can ALL look to God as our Father. When we have faith in God, He welcomes us into His family and treats us as such.

What an amazing privilege and honour this provides to us.

1 John 3:1 says “See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him.”

It’s a horrible feeling when you see someone you know you’ve met before and can’t remember their name. Even worse, when someone introduces themselves, and they clearly know who you are, but you cannot remember them at all! We can avoid this in our relationship with God by creating time to set aside to connect with Him, growing closer to Him each time. The flow on effect is that we would never question God’s name or forget that we know Him.

As Christians we are set apart by the relationship we have with the Father. We do not want to be the people of the world who can’t see when God is moving. An ongoing relationship requires each of us to be actively involved.

Here are 3 things that can help you to continue to develop your relationship with God:

1. We can talk to God like a child talks to their father by

  • Asking silly questions (John 16:24)
  • Coming to Him in times of need (Philippians 4:4-7)
  • Talking to Him about everything (Psalm 145:18-19)

2. We can think of God like a child thinks of their father who:

  • Provides safety and security (Philippians 4:19)
  • Contains immense love (Deuteronomy 7:9; Psalm 136:26)

 3. We can depend on God like a child depends on their Father who:

  • Is there in our time of need (Psalm 46:1-3)
  • Always looks out for us (Psalm 32:8)
  • Challenges us to reach our potential (1 Peter 5:10)

May you all continue to grow in your relationship with God, and as a result be a beacon of His character and love shining a light into the lives of others.
