Out and About

ANZAC Day 2023

During the recent school holidays, the College Leaders, Fatima Hussein, Cameron Preiss, Isabella Marafioti and Sienna Edwards, accompanied by Mr David Thiele, attended the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at the Salisbury War Memorial. It was a well-attended event. The student leaders laid a wreath on behalf of the College in memory of all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in defence of this nation.

Meanwhile, College Captain Jesse Isaac was in New Zealand serving in the Federation Guard at the Dawn Service at the National War Memorial in Wellington.

In 2023, some significant milestones in the military history of our nation are being observed. It is eighty years since the completion of the notorious Thai-Burma railway. From October 1942 to October 1943 the Japanese army forced about 60,000 Allied prisoners of war – including 13,000 Australians and roughly 200,000 civilians, mostly Burmese and Malayans – to build a 415km railway linking Thailand and Burma. All but 50 kilometres of the route was across rugged terrain covered in dense jungle. It would require building more than 600 bridges as well as hundreds of viaducts, embankments and cuttings. About 2800 Australians died building the railway. The railway has entered the Australian consciousness as a byword for courage and resilience in the face of extreme hardship and cruelty.

It is seventy years since hostilities ended in the Korean War. Over 17,000 Australians served in this conflict and 340 did not return home. Also, it is fifty years since Australia’s formal involvement in the Vietnam War concluded. By that time, over 60,000 Australians had served in this war, with 523 deaths and more than 2,400 wounded.

This year, may we remember and give thanks for the service of all those who have fought for our freedoms, and we also give thanks for all those serving our country today.

Lest we forget.

Endeavour College Students Shine at SACE Art Show

On two crisp autumn afternoons, Endeavour College Year 11 and 12 Art and Design students embarked on an educational journey to the highly anticipated SACE Art Show. The event showcased a stunning selection of art and design works created by talented students in 2022. This exhibition provided an invaluable opportunity for our senior students to navigate the rest of the year.

The SACE Art Show is an annual exhibition celebrating the creative accomplishments of South Australian Art and Design students.

Endeavour College proudly had several students' works selected for this exhibition, demonstrating the immense talent and dedication of our burgeoning artists. The selected pieces showcased the students' diverse skills and unique perspectives, reflecting the highest standard of art education.

All advertising materials and promotion of the event was also awarded to Endeavour old scholar, Alexandra Matters, for her 'Sea of Change' 2021 artwork.

As the Year 11 and 12 students navigated the gallery, they were able to admire the excellent work of their fellow students, as well as gain inspiration for their artistic pursuits. The exhibition offered a unique opportunity for students to witness the creative process from inception to completion as they observed the development of ideas and techniques employed by their peers.

The visit also fostered a sense of camaraderie and pride among our students. As they viewed the pieces, they shared their thoughts and impressions, encouraging one another to strive for artistic excellence. The art show visit served as a testament to the importance of supporting and celebrating the artistic achievements of our school community.

The Art Department is incredibly proud of the four students chosen to have their work exhibited at the SACE Art Show, as well as Alexandra (2021) for securing the immense privilege of having her work of art featured on all event promotion.

Debating

Year 8s and 9s

On Thursday May 11th, the Year 8s and 9s participated in their first debate of the year at Nazareth Catholic College in Flinders Park. Students had been preparing for this debate since Term 1 and did a fantastic job considering this was the first time that the Year 8s had ever participated in a debate and the Year 9s were facing more experienced teams with a more sophisticated topic this season.

The topic for Year 8s was “That teachers should allow students to call them by their first names.” with team disagreeing with the statement. Not only did they debate brilliantly for their first time, but they also won the debate, with the Speaker of the Night award going to Elizabeth Brown!

The topic for the Year 9 debate was "That rewrites of Roald Dahl’s books is unacceptable" with all three Year 9 teams agreeing with this statement. While the Blue team unfortunately didn't win this round, teams Red and Orange came through with a win and across the 3 Year 9 teams, Rachel Ratsch and Samantha Perryman both won the Speaker of the Night awards. The debating coaches are incredibly proud of all 4 teams who have had an amazing start to the season and we are very keen to see how they perform as the year progresses.

On June 1st, the Year 8 team will debate the topic "That traffic fines should be based on income" in the affirmative and the Year 9s will debate the topic "That Elon Musk unblocking people on Twitter is a good idea" in both the negative and affirmative across the three teams.
