Environmental Corner

As we are coming into Spring and Summer we are moving outside so I thought I would include some environmentally friendly exercises you can do under COVID conditions. In addition, there are some tips on how to make your outside exercise program more sustainable. Here are the environmental and sustainable suggestions for you:

Plogging

Plogging is a new trend in fitness which provides a healthy body and a healthier planet at the same time. It involves you picking up litter while you jog or walk. Just pick up recyclable waste and put it where it belongs to help stop littering and plastic wastage as well as cleaning up the community environment.

Frisbee

Frisbee is a quick and easy way to get moving with the family that you can do in your back yard. Count how many times you can throw the frisbee back and forth without dropping it, and make it more of a workout by asking everyone to make you run for it.

Join the kids

Play catch or tag, go for a bike ride within your 5 kilometres, shoot baskets, or pass the soccer ball with your kids.

Build more movement into your day

For many of us, spending more time at home means sitting more—watching TV, working at the computer, being on Zoom meetings. But you can still find ways to incorporate more movement into your day. For example:

  • Intersperse household chores into your sitting time e.g. vacuum a room, scrub a sink, do some yard work, or wipe down your appliances.
  • Move around while you are on a call, stand for an online meeting, do squats or lunges while you’re waiting for a meeting to start, or jumping jacks in front of the TV during the credits or commercial breaks.

Recycling Exercise Shoes

If you work out on a regular basis, you will likely burn through several shoes over the course of a year. Instead of throwing away those old sneakers, consider donating them to a local charitable organization. For instance, Nike have their own recycling program that turns old shoes into playground materials.
