Science Week

St James College students have still been able to celebrate Science Week remotely this year!

For such a changing, unpredictable year, it is only fitting that the theme be relating to one of the most unknown parts of our world, the oceans.

The theme for 2020 Science Week is: Deep Blue: innovations for the future of our oceans.

With this in mind and the limited physical activities we can do as a college community, students have been given fun facts and information each day about the ocean. Did you know that an estimated 50-80% of all life on Earth is found under the ocean surface? Less than 10% of the ocean space has been explored by humans. The average depth of the ocean is 3,795m, whilst the average height of land is only 840m.

Students have also been recommended “ocean-themed” documentaries and movies to pique their interest. From “A Blue Planet” Sir David Attenborough documentary, to Hollywood epic “Jaws” and even the Disney classic, “Finding Nemo”.

The college has also had a general knowledge Science Kahoot Quiz running. Questions ranged from all subject areas in Years 7 through to 10. This is based on correct answers and answering quickly for extra points.

Congratulations to the following students for their outstanding results:

Joshua B: 87% with a score of 12,695

Josh D: 80% with a score of 11,664

Charlie: 80% with a score of 11,445

Oliver B: 93% with a score of 11,340

Kevin C: 80% with a score of 10,805

Ari S: 73% with a score of 10,662

Special mention to Mr. Joel Harriss 67% with a score of 9,079 being the highest staff score!

Thank you to all for your involvement and interest in Science Week this year!
