From the Principal

Term 3 - week 8

Learning, excitement, fun and teamwork have been the themes dominating the last fortnight at KHS.

Year 12 students are now in their final stretch of schooling, most demountable classrooms have been removed from our site, and Year 11 students have successfully completed their final Preliminary examinations.

Our school oval is now mostly cleared of demountable classrooms and we hope to return this space to students as soon as all machinery and debris is removed, and safety elements restored. I thank the many people involved in undertaking this large project in a swift and efficient manner. In particular, DP01, DP02, DP03 and DP04 have been at our school for many years, and the removal of these demountable classrooms has opened up areas for innovative uses. Our P&C Building Committee has been thinking about ways to refresh and efficiently utilise spaces around the school. Mr Bruce Davidson our Business Manager has overseen the work to remove these classrooms and I thank him for his management.

Year 12 Connect Sessions

Throughout Week 8 and 9, I will be meeting with Year 12 students to personally congratulate them on their achievements in 2020 as they near the end of their schooling experience. These sessions have been taking place in the Year 12 COLA during Home Group. It has been wonderful to connect with Year 12 students as they reminisce on their experiences here at KHS.

School Captains

Astrid Balle and Will Savage have served our school community with distinction. Both Astrid and Will have led from the front and garnered the respect of their peers and teachers, for their shared philosophy of bringing out the best in their peers. On Tuesday 8/9/20, I worked alongside Astrid and Will to shortlist our 2020-2021 School Captain candidates, and their insight was very beneficial to this process and many of the candidates shared their respect for our current captains. Astrid and Will have worked tirelessly in the background to support many school events. Whether it’s sporting events, wellbeing projects or virtual meetings, both captains have supported our school’s operations in a calm, respectful and effective manner. Our school captains have worked hard to maintain a sense of community and belonging amongst their Year 12 peers and the broader school community, and this has positively shaped the school experience for many students, not just Year 12. At the moment, Will and Astrid are preparing for their roles in the Year 12 graduation ceremony, coordinating elements of the Year 12 video and overall, supporting their Year 12 peers to enjoy their remaining days at Killara High School. On behalf of all students and our broader community, I wish to thank Astrid and Will for their extraordinary leadership throughout 2019 and 2020. It has certainly been a challenging year where leadership has been under the microscope, and it has been an honour watching our captains navigate all that 2020 has thrown our way.

Respectful relationships

We have continued our focus on promoting rights, resilience and respectful relationships throughout the school. Last week we had Senior Constable Lewis Peters and Lynda Hart, our Police Liaison Officers visit our school to speak with Stage 5 students. The discussion was well received and students gained practical ideas and strategies.

Year 11 Preliminary Examination

Year 11 students conducted themselves with great maturity during their Preliminary examination period. Year 11 will gradually prepare for entry into the HSC course which commences in Term 4. To support students in developing positive study strategies, Elevate Education will be running workshops for students in Years 9,10 and 11 over the coming weeks.

I look forward to sharing more exciting learning experiences over the coming weeks.
