Football - NOT Soccer!

This term, students from Years 2-6 have taken part in four football (round ball) coaching sessions with Mr Mark Johnston from Football NSW at nearby Ison Park.

This is the 'umpteenth' year that Mark has faithfully brought the beautiful game to our Primary students. The game's popularity continues to grow among our boys and girls as they eagerly look forward to the Women's World Cup Finals being hosted in Australasia in 2023.

The students' skills improved 'out of sight' over the month-long sessions. It was great to see everyone having fun together and enjoying physical activity in the fresh air and sunshine. Year 2 were some of the most enthusiastic participants as we opened it up to late Stage 1 students for the first time.

Huge thanks to Mark for making the sessions happen, in spite of the troubled times in which we find ourselves.

Big Bash for Years 3-6 students

On Thursday 3 September, NCS students in Stages 2 and 3 took part in a cricket incursion at school.  Two representatives from Cricket NSW came to run a Big Bash Style gala morning for each of the two stages.

Teams of 8 players took on each other in short matches, in which everyone had chances to bat, bowl, field and keep wicket for an over or two.

Much fun and activity was had and enjoyed by all. There was funky music pumping out of speakers, as students attempted to blast the ball for runs galore. There was lots of activity as our children enjoyed themselves throughout. Every over, wickets were falling, spectacular run-outs occurred, sensational catches were held or fumbled and tonnes of runs were scored!

The very next week the same students were treated to an online ZOOM Q and A session with two of Sydney Thunder's cricketers, Samantha Bates and Baxter Holt. Students got to ask questions of the female and male representative cricketers to gain a window into the life of professional sports stars. Our students were erudite and polite in the way they asked questions and listened to responses.

Cricket was the real winner on the day, as many students realised the simple fun behind what is generally considered a highly technical sport. Great thanks to Jenna Purcell for organising both events.

Budding Gymnasts!

For the first five weeks of Term 3, Stages 2 and 3 participated in gymnastics lessons. K-2 students also participated in the program during weeks 6-10.

Students enjoyed learning a range of physical skills such as balancing, rolling, climbing, jumping, bouncing and lifting their own body weight. Here are some reflections from some Year 3 students.

My highlight of gymnastics was the parallel bars. Our class got to do challenges on it, like how long you can hold your legs up before they fall down. You could also swing to the other side. We did the ‘inside out’ as well. But my favourite thing that we did on the parallel bars was the challenges. They were REALLY fun! Larissa G

My highlight  of gymnastics was the chin-ups. I got up to 10 chin-ups! I think I got 4th best in my class! It was really hard but I did it eventually. The chin-ups were done on one big purple bar which was really slippery. Also, doing chin-ups can make you strong if you do it lots. Do you think you can do chin-ups? What I like about chin-ups is that they make you want to do more and more. Isabella Y

My highlight of gymnastics was the parallel bars. I like to do the parallel bars because, not only do you get fit, you also get healthy from the workout. I also like that you can challenge your friends, family and other people and you get stronger from it. Another thing is your hands get really sweaty and your arms get really tired. Ellie W

We were especially thankful for our wonderful gymnastics coaches, Michael and Erin. We look forward to more fun with them next year!
