Remote Literacy Teaching

Learning Specialist Literacy and Pedagogy

At Greensborough College all teachers are focusing on literacy as we know that everyone needs to know how to read well. Reading is not something you learn to do naturally like walking; it is something you only learn when you are taught. Everyone can improve their reading skills- even during remote learning- when most of your learning is done by reading.

 Year 7-10 English

  • Teachers have been focusing on improving student’s reading skills through reading independent and whole class texts.
  • Students have been expected to read books they have at home. We know that with libraries and bookshops closed at present, choosing books you like for reading has become difficult.
  • At the beginning of Term 4, students in Year 7 will be undertaking an on line reading test to help teachers work out what books would be appropriate and enjoyable for each student to read in Term 4 both at home and at school.

Whole school literacy

  • In all classes - where they can - teachers are using the strategies below to help students improve their reading skills. These strategies are simple and easy to use for everyone and based on a wide range of research.
  • Anytime anyone (even adults) has something that is hard to read, using all or some of these strategies helps you understand the text you are reading. It doesn’t matter whether it is the newspaper, a textbook or your favorite piece of fiction.   Next time you have something hard to read try using these to help you comprehend.

Before you start the reading make a prediction.

During reading when you get stuck do all of the rest as you go along for each section of reading.

Reading Intervention programs

Throughout Term 3 the school has run two programs for students needing extra support in Literacy. For Years 7 & 8, a number of students have participated in our Fast Track Reading Program (FTR) which teaches students to decode text and our Middle years Literacy and Numeracy Program (MYLNS) which has a focus on comprehension. MYLNS is a government funded program and in 2020, students targeted for MYLNS support came from Years 10 & 11.  In 2021, students from Years 8 &10 will be targeted for this support.
