Term 3 - return to remote learning

While this year has been different and presented many moments of challenge, I would like you to take a moment to reflect on what you have each achieved whilst learning from home. We (the Junior School Team) believe you have learnt so many new skills, from mastering WebEx, to keeping yourselves on track in class, and learning new forms of communication with your teachers such as Learning Task comments, emails, Compass discussions and Webex chat. We know that it hasn’t been the easiest thing to do but we are very impressed with your efforts to take on change and adapt to this new form of learning.

Throughout the term, we have continued to celebrate the milestones that mark students movement through their high school years. We congratulate students on receiving a Semester One award, saw the Year 7 students reach 100 days of Secondary Schooling, and awarded many students with merit points for their hard work, determination, display of school values and the school pride they displayed in their learning. We also saw many students actively take part in the Schools physical education challenge of virtually walking to Perth by recording their physical activity on the Strava App. I urge any students yet to join, to join up and take part in the schools collaborate effort to meet our exercise targets and take part in exercise every day.

Wishing you all a safe, happy and relaxing term break. I hope you take the time to reflect on your achievements from Term 3 and set new goals to work on in Term 4, as well as taking time out to relax with your family after a busy term.

Year 7

The term is almost at an end, and with it comes spring, a well-deserved break, and the prospect of returning before the end of the year (fingers crossed!).

Year 7 is a time of great change for our students, but this year has meant more change than ever. Greensborough College’s Year 7s have demonstrated how versatile and resilient they are during remote learning and I want to commend all of their efforts, especially as they are still learning how to navigate high school life with different subjects and teachers.

The memories of remote learning will seem distant by the time they graduate Greensborough College, but I am sure that the lessons learned will be around for much longer. Take time to reflect on all you have accomplished despite the challenges.

Year 8

I am very proud of the way that Year 8 has taken to the challenges of remote learning and adapted to the uncertain and unprecedented situation that we are living through here in Melbourne. Each week, when catching up with students through a video meeting, through a phone call or through an email I am reminded of our student’s resilience, humour and honesty. I have been particularly impressed by the way that many year 8 students have embraced the challenges of technology within remote learning. Many new programs, processes and modes of communication have been handed to you and some of these you have embraced and improved. I can’t count the amount of times students have told me ‘Mr Harber you need to click there and then it will work’ or ‘if you do it this way, it’s heaps easier!’

As we are all aware, some weeks can also be really tough and motivation can be hard to muster from behind a laptop screen and separated from your friends. I urge any of you who may be feeling less than fantastic to reach out to your friends, to your families and remember there is always support available through the Junior School team and through the Wellbeing team. But remember, in the words of our Principal Ms. Barker, ‘do what you can, when you can, with what you have’.

I wish you all a safe and happy term break. Enjoy the warmer weather!

  Year 9

I would like to give a big congratulations to all the year 9 students this term. Not only have they been online during remote learning, but have had to begin new subjects this semester. You all have done such a fantastic job.

I am so proud in knowing that every student has given their best efforts this term. Lockdown has been hard for everyone. Year 9 is a very difficult year when you are attending school face to face. The fact that so many of you are trying as best as you can is what I as the Year level leader is so proud of. Your friends are very important part of your life in year 9 and I know that many of you are really missing those connections and interactions with your classmates. Can I just say that your teachers are all missing being in the classroom too.

Your connection with your teachers and friends is important and hopefully we will be able to see each other face to face next term and not just as blank boxes on WebEx. I know that there are many students that would like to never hear the word 'WebEx' again and your teachers do too.

From every negative you will find a positive. The skills you all are gaining and learning will help you not only for the rest of your high school years, but also when you go to university and work. They are skills you wont lose.

So enjoy your term 3 break. Go for a walk without worrying that you will be late to your next class and enjoy some more quality time with your family. I am looking forward to seeing all the year 9's next term.
