Xenica Community Report

Term 2 Overview

This term in the Xenica Community, the Year 1 and 2 students will be investigating the topic of forces and motion as part of their Inquiry unit. Students will be attending an excursion to Scienceworks in week 3 to engage in hands on experiences which will allow them to gain a deeper understanding of the topic. 

 

Students will be working on their fluency skills during reading lessons. They will practise reading texts with expression, and will experiment with different types of punctuation such as full stops, exclamation marks, question marks and speech marks. Throughout the term students will also work on developing their literal and inferential comprehension skills by using clues from the text as well as their background knowledge. 

 

This term in Maths the students will be developing their additive thinking skills. They will do this by solving addition and subtraction problems using a range of mental and written strategies which include counting on, doubles facts, partitioning and place value for larger numbers. 

 

In Writing students will be working on their word choice and vocabulary where they will experiment with new and familiar vocabulary to effectively write sentences and a range of text types. Students will also look closely at different types of texts and learn how to correctly create and organise short imaginative, informative and persuasive texts using knowledge of text structures for a given audience.
