The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process - it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.

What is assessed?

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials. See example NAPLAN questions at nap.edu.au

How can I help my child prepare?

Help your child prepare by reassuring them that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and by reminding them on the day to simply try their best. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the types of questions in the tests and will provide appropriate support and guidance. ACARA does not recommend excessive preparation for NAPLAN or the use of services by coaching providers.

NAPLAN is about assessing learning progress in literacy and numeracy.

Participation in NAPLAN:

All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to participate in the annual NAPLAN assessment.

NAPLAN Timeline:

How is my child’s performance measured?

Individual student performance is shown on a national achievement scale for each test. A result at the national minimum standard indicates that the student has demonstrated the basic literacy and numeracy skills needed to participate fully in that year level. A NAPLAN individual student report will be issued by your child’s school later in the year. If you do not receive a report, you should contact your child’s school.

How are NAPLAN results used?

• Students and parents may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.

• Teachers use results to better identify students who would benefit from greater challenges or extra support.

• Schools use results to identify strengths and areas to improve in teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.

• School systems use results to review programs and support offered to schools.

Attitude to school survey

WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK!

We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School Survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's schooling experience.

Students from Year 4 to 6 at our school will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool.  It is important to note that we are not in any way “testing” your child. Your child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during, or after completion of the survey.

Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an assigned identifier that may be used to link data for statistical and research purposes only. All responses to the survey are kept anonymous in the response file. Personal identification data will not be recorded in the survey response file. This ensures that the confidentiality of your child’s responses is protected at all times.

This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our school over the period Monday 29 April to Friday 7 June. The survey only takes 20 minutes to complete and occurs during your child's class time.

If you would like more information, please speak to your child’s teacher or visit: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/teachers/management/improvement/Pages/performsurveyat.aspx

Sentral Parent Portal

Our school has undertaken a new initiative, the Parent Portal, to provide parents information about each student\'s progress in our school through Sentral.

Letters were sent home with the required information to register for this communication service.

Many families have successfully registered using an email address and created a password for access. If you have yet to register we highly recommend you take the steps as outlined in the original letter as Sentral is our main form of communication. Notices, reminders, Reports and interview bookings will be through Sentral.

Many families have come to see us not being able to see any information on the Portal. To see any information from the school and to link to your enrolled children, you must enter the access key provided in the original letter. This is best completed on a Desktop computer NOT via the app on your phone.

If you have any questions/concerns, require a new letter or access to a desktop please come to reception either before or after school where we will be able to assist you with creating an account or/and linking your children.
