Senior VCAL Profile

Amos Duckett
In VCAL it is rare that a young man remains with the same employer for a three year period, however, that is the situation experienced by Amos, a Year 12 Senior VCAL student. In Year 10 Amos approached Bill Sezenias, owner of All Time Property Development, for work experience. After working for a short two week stint Amos knew the career pathway that he wished to pursue. He again contacted Bill when he enrolled in the Intermediate VCAL course in Year 11 and sourced a long term work placement. This year, as a Year 12 Senior VCAL student Amos again went to work with All Time Property Development and at the time of the visit Amos was assisting with the building of an extension to a property in Glen Iris.
Amos has learnt many skills under Bill’s tutelage and he has assisted with framing, strapping, bracing and cutting timber to required lengths. Amos has also applied himself to the mundane aspects of labouring and has dug many holes and he has become a master of the broom. He has even undertaken a chippie’s most hated task and conquered the paint brush. Bill’s sage advice to Amos has been that if you understand the skills required by the other trades such as painting and plastering you then know how to quality control the work of contractors who may one day be under your charge.
Amos has impressed all with his willingness to follow instructions, his hard working and enthusiastic attitude and his pleasant disposition, he was a worthy winner of the Year 11 VCAL Intermediate Student of the Year in 2019. He would certainly would be an asset to any employer.
Mazenod College would like to thank Bill, of All Time Property Development, who has provided Amos with the skills, advice and guidance that is required by those working in carpentry. It is obvious to all who know and speak with Amos, that he loves working with his hands and we wish Amos all the best for his future in building and construction.
If you would have a position for Amos, as an apprentice carpenter, and would love to give an industrious, enthusiastic young man a chance, please contact Mr Leigh Harris, Coordinator of VET and VCAL,
