The Year13 Expo lets you find a career you’re genuinely passionate about without even having to get out of bed. Over the course of the week, you’ll hear from experts, chat with influencers and explore all of your post-school options at our digital careers expo that you can access from anywhere you have internet.

From May 18-22, you’ll be able to explore exhibits from a host of different universities, TAFEs, colleges, employers and gap year providers. But you’ll also get the opportunity to hear from some amazing career folk who are nailing it in their industry. Through a series of live chats, webinars and online ‘booths’, the Year13 Expo will help you figure out what it is you’re passionate about and what you need to do in order to get there.

Law Week 2020

There’s something for everyone during Law Week this year!

Law Week is an annual festival of events which makes learning about the law easy. This year Law Week will look different to last year, but it is going ahead, nonetheless. With webinars, interviews, information sessions, free legal advice, podcasts and plenty more, Law Week makes learning about the law easy for all Victorians. This year, Law Week will take place from Monday 18 - Sunday 24 May 2020.

Federation University - New Courses introduced in 2020

This year Federation University has introduced a number of new courses. These include:

Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Information Engineering) Honours

This course is designed to meet the requirements of Engineers Australia and produce accredited professional engineers with in-depth knowledge and skills across the interdisciplinary domain of electrical and information engineering.

Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours)

This course focuses particularly on occupational therapy in rural and remote settings and being equipped to handle the unique challenges of these areas.

Bachelor of Human Services and Entrepreneurship

Students in this course develop a broad suite of skills to become a social entrepreneur who can assist, advocate, and empower people and communities who are experiencing complex social and economic challenges.

Bachelor of Performing Arts

This exciting new program replaces the highly regarded Bachelor of Music Theatre and Bachelor of Acting for Stage and Screen. This course will prepare students not only for a career as a performer, but also to become an active citizen of the world. Graduates will go on to work in television and theatre, music theatre, opera, film, cabaret, comedy, and multi-media performance. They will also go on to do creative things in the most surprising contexts both in Australia and internationally.

Industry Employment Summary

In February this year, the Department of Employment released the trend in employment indicating that employment increased in nine industries and declined in 10 over the year to February 2020.

Health Care and Social Assistance; Education and Training and Professional, Scientific and Technical Services made the largest contributions to employment growth. The largest falls in employment were recorded in Retail Trade, Other Services and Public Administration and Safety.

Employment in the Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing and Manufacturing industries is expected to continue to fall.

What do Web Designers do?

Web Designers use a range of skills to build, redesign and maintain websites for their clients. Using both creative and technical skills they generate websites that are functional, meet the needs of different businesses and organisations, are aesthetically appealing and user friendly.

If you’re creative with a flair for graphic design and the ability to see the bigger picture then this could be a great career for you to consider.

About you:

Great technical skills including coding, graphic design, UX, design software and devices, strong maths skills could be beneficial too
Impressive communication skills as you’ll need to ascertain your client’s requirements, and SEO, content writing and marketing are also important aspects of this job
Organised, great at managing your time efficiently, and happy to constantly update your knowledge and skills

Provide advice and ideas, then design concepts to meet customer’s needs
Do research and analysis of suitable technical requirements
Detail and document plans and layouts for client approval
Write and edit codes and content
Design or supervise development of websites and problem solve issues that arise
Maintain, update and back up regularly

How to become a Web Designer in Australia:

Formal qualifications aren’t essential to becoming a Web Designer in Australia, if you choose to pursue this career without qualifications you’ll need to get extensive experience and amass a great portfolio of works. Qualifications could fast track your career.

Step 1 – Strong maths skills could make life easier in this job so make sure you study hard at school, and you don’t have to focus entirely on tech or IT subjects.

Step 2 – Learn to code, if this isn’t offered at your school you can learn online or attend extracurricular classes and workshops. Focus on HTML and CSS, but learning JavaScript, XML, PHP and other languages is also advantageous.

Step 3 – Get experience of all kinds. Find work experience placements, work on design projects at school, create your own website, volunteer to work on or design websites for other people and organisations.

Step 4 – Start building a portfolio of your work, build on it and keep it updated throughout your career.

Step 5 – Research tertiary courses that might interest you and could boost your entry level into the industry, e.g.

Website Design – Level 1 at RMIT only 10 weeks

Certificate IV in Programming at TAFE or another RTO – 12 months

Bachelor of Design (Digital Technologies) at the Deakin University

Step 6 – Build your online presence, network, keep up to date with new technology, software and design trends
