Health & Physical Education
Like many other subjects, the Health & Physical Education domain had to get creative and adapt to Term Two’s new online learning environment. Commendations go out to all Box Hill High School teachers and students, who displayed the flexibility of contortionists during the period of learning from home.
With team sports, group fitness classes and gym sessions on hold we were challenged to find a solution to keep students engaged in their physical fitness from afar. Knowing the positive effect physical activity can have on an individual’s mental health we were even more motivated to promote an active lifestyle during isolation.
As a part of their HPE work, students were asked to complete a weekly Physical Activity Logbook, recording three or more 30-minute sessions a week. A large list of possible activities, apps and loungeroom workouts were provided by the domain, offering students variety and inspiration, while allowing them the autonomy to choose what kind of exercise they wanted to participate in.
Throughout the term students were challenged with periods of low motivation, but many persisted in completing their weekly physical activities. Here are some of the Logbook entries:
It felt good to hang out with Finn and Daniel because we hadn’t gone for a while since it had been raining.
Just need some time to myself and there isn’t one room in the house where I can do that. Not even my room. Siblings.
It was good to go outside and get some fresh air.
I did netball shots for about 15 minutes, because I still have to train even though I’m not playing at the moment. Then after dinner I went for another walk with my dad, but again both were quite easy.
As soon as the E-sport challenge appeared I went to my backyard with my Fitbit to measure my running distance in 20 minutes. I would say I am not proud of myself because I got 2300 meters and I know I could do better than that because I did the 1.6 K run in 6 minute 50 seconds at school this year.
I went on a 20k bike ride with my older sister. It was really fun because we went along the mountain bike tracks, although we got really muddy because it had just been raining.
I did boxing with my dad and it started to burn my arms after a while which was hard.
I felt more energised after jogging than before. Next time I will jog for more than 40 minutes.
Year 9 Sport
During the learning from home period, the Year 9 Sport students were asked to choose a sport that they would like to improve their skills in and complete a two-week training program. Each student had to choose different skills to develop in their sport and come up with activities for each skill. Each day they would complete some of these activities with the goal at the end of the two weeks being an improvement in skill development.
Here are some of the activities students included in their two-week training programs:
