Return of the Prac

The Technology Faculty consists of many varying subjects. From Metal Fabrication to Food Studies, to Web Publishing and Robotics, the thread that binds these disciplines is the design process.

The design process reinforces the nonlinear way in which we solve problems; it promotes investigation and creativity, it asks students (designers) to critically think about their ideas and the impact they might have, it develops planning and preparation skills and it focuses on the evaluation of their end results and how integral that reflection is to future improvement.

With the majority of term two being delivered via remote learning, one of the core stages of this process (and undoubtedly the most popular with students), the production, has been somewhat sidelined.

Last week Year 11’s & 12’s returned to a school landscape which was significantly different. With safety and social distancing protocols at the forefront of our approach, many students were able to get back into the swing of production. Self-sanitising (either through washing at available sinks or using the hand sanitisers in each room) is the priority, along with the cleaning of equipment and personal protective equipment.

In this example, Year 11 Product Design students at the Clyde North Campus were able to continue with the production of their contemporary sustainable lights. Many were excited to use a combination of traditional production techniques; pillar drills, hand drills, scroll saw in conjunction with 3D printing, with the view to develop and produce something visually impressive.
