PERFORMING ARTS

The Victorian State School Spectacular is going to look a little different this year. With the current conditions around covid -19, sadly it meant the big arena event at Melbourne Arena (which has 3,000 performers and a total of 10,000 person audience over two shows) had to be abandoned and a new event created. The new version State School Spectacular is going to be 'spectacular' with our performers taking part in a 'virtual performance'. Each participating student will be recorded performing their song or dance individually, which will then result in a magnificent piece of work, to be shared across the world. During this year many virtual choir groups have been created such as this:

Alongside this,  the Victorian Performing Arts team are also looking to create a virtual dance performance, and although the number of dances featuring our own students will be limited.

I cannot begin to thank all of our choir and dance students who have undertaken online rehearsals for many months in the hope of being able to perform as used to happen. With this news comes disappointment but as we are all learning all too quickly, we have to deal with new ideas and make changes to expectations. Congratulations to the following students from all of our five campuses who have chosen to continue rehearsing and to be part of this once in a life time experience. One of the choral pieces is Beethoven's Symphony No 9 Ode to Joy....... in German! This will be amazing!

EXTENDED SCHOOL DAY

Our popular and successful program of delivering curriculum opportunities after regular school ends is the Extended School Day running from 3.45 to 4.45pm. It is important for our whole of college approach to learning and enables children from all campuses to extend their peer relationships and friendships with others who have similar interests.

Sadly we were unable to deliver the program on site in Term 2 and an online program  was offered to meet students' needs and many students took the opportunity to participate and gave very positive feedback.

A Term 3 program was put in place but as we continue to deal with COVID-19 restrictions  we once again have made  the very hard decision to implement an online only option for students. I am happy to say the online program will be loaded with some new videos for all students to enjoy. I am going around to all classes to talk further about the opportunities and notes have sent to all families. Students have also been sent the video explaining how to access the site. I hope many students will take the opportunity to engage with these programs and continue to enjoy all the the Extended School Day has to offer until we can be back face to face.

Sport continues to grow throughout the SEED Program with all safety precautions put in place. The SEED team has worked tirelessly on making sure we can run our program throughout these challenging times. It’s a credit to our SEED staff that have stepped up in the absence of coaches and adapted so well under the circumstances. The students have also embraced the changes with a positive attitude.

Year 6 Transition: A Mini SEED transition has been run by Mr Hauenstein across the P-8  Campuses every Wednesday explaining what SEED is all about and running fitness testing to assist with future  TI (Talent Identification) before heading into Goldsworthy Campus. Well done to the students of this Year’s 7and 8 SEED Development squad for assisting with this program.

Year 7 and 8 Friday SEED Sport

The SEED Staff have done a fantastic job in setting up the SEED program for students to continue as per normal at their own campuses.

Year 9 and 10 SEED

Cricket: Great to see our Year 9 and 10 Cricketers using our amazing facilities and having access to our state of the art bowling machine which was donated by the Lord Taverner’s Group.

Our College is very privileged to have one of Geelong’s best cricketer’s in Mr Hauenstein running the program. In our Year 9 and 10 groups we have been back training this term with the addition of Cricket.

Football: Our Year 9 and 10 football program is buzzing this term. The energy that is out on the pitch has shown the improvement in the students throughout this program. Well done to Mr Cooper and Melissa Hickey for coaching this group.

Soccer: Our soccer program was lucky enough to have 3 of last year’s Year 10 SEED Soccer stars (Poe Poe, Yo Tha , Sha Mo ) come back in a coaching role to help show the Year 9 and 10 students how much they have developed throughout this program in the last 12 months.

The students were outstanding in the way that they listened, paid attention to and participated in the drills that the coaches put forward. Well done to Ms McPherson and a thank you to Ms Cochrane for allowing us the Year 11 VCAL students to coach.

Basketball: Basketball is continuing to thrive in the SEED program, its great to see the technical and tactical parts of the game being applied by the SEED students. Well done to Mr Finlayson and Mr Johns on their great program.
