1-6 art news - week 7

G’day Artlovers,

Let me start by acknowledging the hard work and dedication shown by all of our parents and carers during the whole remote learning experience...some of you are still at it! It can be a tough slog. I am hoping that the Art activities I set were suitable, fun and inspiring. It can be difficult motivating kids to work at home, it can be hard finding the energy as a carer to start the day knowing that the prospect of homeschooling lays before you, so I applaud all of you, appreciate your efforts, and loved the personal comments and emails that some of you sent me. It really helped me during this time and I loved reading them.

Tiny House Project

I have been delighted at all of the tiny houses being constructed all across the Brunswick North Western region. They are looking amazing! Imagine what they will look like when they are all together...in a tiny town. That is one of the ideas Jack and I are playing around with as we work towards putting on the REUNIFICATION exhibition later in the term.

For those of you that are unaware of what I’m referring to during the remote learning period students have been making tiny houses out of small boxes. It started as a tribute to the space that I was spending a great deal of time in; the shed. I developed a love/hate relationship with the shed. I loved working from home and setting my own hours, but was frustrated by the fact that I couldn’t communicate immediately with students and my peers. I thought others might be feeling the same way about their remote learning spaces. It is a unique time and I became inspired by its weirdness.

But, it won’t be forever. We are returning to school. We wanted to celebrate the feeling of returning to a new regular life and being with our friends again. By constructing these small spaces we could reflect on this period, as well as rejoicing in the fact that we are reunified again by building our own tiny town together.

There will be other elements to the show. Some students are recording sounds and short videos. Others will be making two dimensional works. Different projects that have been created during this time will also be considered. The exhibition hopes to bring it all together to help us celebrate the sense of community that school can offer. I think it is going to be amazing. Stay tuned for further information as the concept develops.

Comic Club

I will put Comic Club on hold for the time being. I’m afraid the prospect of sixty kids in the art room at lunchtime is a little too much for me at the moment. I was running Comic Club during the remote learning period and posted weekly videos with activities. If you missed them and would like to check them out, go to @bnwps_comix on Twitter. The clips will be there. Or, you could go to the school’s blog at bnwps.global2.vic.edu.au where I posted regularly for Comic Club, as well as other Art related bits and pieces.

Drawing Games

Thank you for all the positive feedback I have received for my drawing games and videos on Youtube. I had a great deal of fun making these and might continue making them. If you wanted to spend some time with the household playing a drawing game go to YouTube and look for Andrew the Art Teacher. Drawing games are a great way to spend time with the kids when it’s too cold or wet to go outdoors. And the kids love them.

That’s about it for me. I hope you are all doing well and staying fit and healthy. And remember; play is an important part of being creative. So, PLAY!

foundie art at home

It’s so great to be back at school! Over the last 6 weeks though lots of Foundies threw themselves into art making at home. We learnt about colours and experimented with mixing primary colours. Foundies made collections of colours, and arranged temporary artworks, and mixed colours through melting coloured ice blocks, dropping ink down vertical paper, and splodging and scratching ink on damp paper. Then to finish, collages were made using our colour experiments. As we return to school we’ll continue to learn about colours and explore the emotions they evoke.
