"Hand over"

This phrase was shared with the team of teachers, support staff and leadership throughout the week and it is one that brings great excitement to Greater Shepparton Secondary College.

On Friday 12th November the keys to the Hawdon Street site were given to the Executive Principal.  Pictured above Chris Scoble from architects Gray Puksand, Barbara O'Brien Executive Principal GSSC, Jason Williamson from builder Hansen Yuncken and Tom Warne from project managers SEMZ.

Some readers may remember the tradition of handing over the keys at 21st birthdays. Well this hand over is one that ushers our public school students and families into a state-of-the-art build with genuine access to 21st Century learning.

This means that all students will have an educational experience preparing them to be effective lifelong learners and contributors to communities. A portrait of our future graduates will show that they have had greater access to key skills including critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity; skills that our young people need to thrive in a complex and rapidly changing world.

Learning for the 21st century is both personal and personalized. The curriculum on offer, the Neighbourhood structure and the genuine community and industry-links combine with learner voice and choice to provide amazing opportunities and pathways. I have never been in a school where there is such a diverse team of professionals wrapped around the learner, supporting, guiding and shaping the learning journeys of our students.

The last two years have indeed been challenging, on so many levels. However, the commitment by staff and the support shown by the Education Department at both a regional and state level has ensured that Greater Shepparton Secondary College is set to be truly ‘great’.

Having just participated in interview panels for the 2022 student leaders, I am confident that Greater Shepparton Secondary College is going to be all that we imagine it can be. The young people putting up their hand to lead the way, spoke about building a culture of respect and belonging, where students can be their true selves.

When asked the question, “Why do you want to be a leader?” more than one applicant spoke about giving back to the schools and staff that have given them so much.

Others responded by wishing to be a part of the history being made as we assemble on one site and many wanted to be amongst the young voices that will help Greater Shepparton Secondary College continue to become ‘greater’ into the future.

Year 12 Exams

Year 12 students have almost completed their exams and it was pleasing to have an independent exam supervisor report how well behaved the students were and how diligently they approached the exams, using the time made available to them.

Overheard was the comment that both teachers and students felt the exams were fair considering the challenges of a COVID interrupted year. We wish our Year 12 students well and hope they enjoy their Valedictory evening next week.

Farewell

Greater Shepparton Secondary College would like to take this opportunity to wish Wanganui Campus Principal, Ken Murray all the very best as he begins his new role with the Education Department. Ken returned mid-year to GSSC to ensure that the vision of the Hawdon Street site remained on track and his assistance has been greatly appreciated. Xavier Tanner and Ken will be formally farewelled by staff this week. Two great and well respected leaders who have helped shape the future of education in Shepparton.

Acting Mooroopna Campus Principal.
