Year 3 Inquiry

In year 3 Inquiry we are learning about how communities are organised differently.

We have learnt about the needs of an urban, suburban and rural community. We worked in groups to make communities out of paper. We had to decide what each community would need and then build it. We also looked at scale. This means we had to make sure the skyscrapers were much bigger than the houses.

After we have finished building with paper, we are going to create communities in Minecraft Education where we either make urban, suburban or rural communities in groups.

Mapping

In year 3 math's, we are learning about mapping and directions like left right forward, back, up, down around, over and under.  We have done many mapping activities such as:

  • Hiding a piece of paper with our name on it and writing directions for someone to find.
  • Mapping the classroom
  • Mapping the school
  • Interpreting Maps
  • Creating a key

At school we have been learning to create communities. We have worked together to make an urban, suburban and rural paper town. Our favourite one was the rural area. Because it was fun to build. We included a water tank, silo, a shed, a barn, a few houses, animals, lakes and a tractor.

I thought about the water tanks from Kangaroo Island because we always go there. I think we worked great as a team in our building.

Swimming

For the last couple of weeks we have had swimming lessons. Today was water safety day. We did breast stroke in our clothes and afterwards we wore life jackets and formed a circle. The swimming teachers spun us around splashed water to make it like a storm. Finally, we were challenged to take our shirt off while in the water and not holding on to anything. It was really fun!

The bus was very loud with all of the students talking and shouting on the way to swimming and on the way back. I don’t think the teachers were too impressed with the noise level in the bus.

In swimming there are different colours to represent in what level you are in. In most of the levels you would do freestyle, back stroke and breast stroke. If we were good we would dive in the water and find sinkies.
