Year 1 News

It’s the Final Countdown… to Year Two in 2022

The Year One students have flourished since returning to the classroom. The last few weeks we have been busy with assessment activities, recommencing swimming lessons and immersing the students further into our Unit of Inquiry.

Unit of Inquiry

There has been continued interest and exploration in learning about the different habitats of the world and the animals that adapt to suit each of the habitats. The past fortnight we have focused on the Desert and the Arctic Regions of the world. The students have this week chosen an animal to research in readiness for their oral presentations next week.

We look forward to sharing these presentations with the parents through our Learning Task feedback in coming weeks.

Maths

As part of our ‘Math Daily 3’, the students have enjoyed reverting back to our ‘Maths with Someone’ sessions at school with their peers, rather than at home with their families as was the case during Remote Learning. ‘Math Daily 3’ is a framework for structuring math time so students develop deep conceptual understanding, mathematical proficiency, and a true love of mathematics. In addition, we are able to provide differentiated instruction, helping to ensure that all students reach their potential.

Over recent weeks the students have enjoyed activities and games from their ‘Math Packs’, and classroom resources, that give them opportunities to explore fundamental number concepts, deepen mathematical understanding, and cultivate mathematical reasoning skills.

Literacy

The students have partaken in multiple written assessments this past fortnight, completing a persuasive piece, a creative narrative and a recount during our morning writing sessions.

We have seen significant growth in the cohort’s ability to apply punctuation, use their visual memory to write high-frequency words, understand and apply appropriate text structure including word choice and sentence structure.

E-Smart Week

This week we have celebrated E-Smart Week by watching some educational video clips explaining what it means to be an ‘Upstanding Digital Citizen’. The students were then asked to create a poster illustrating the four qualities that our Cyber Safety lessons have covered this year: Responsibility, Integrity, Strength and Empathy.

Action

Congratulations to Ed from 1A who showcased his natural curiosity with animals by 'taking action' and bringing in two books to share with the class.

Congratulations to Emilia, of 1C, who created a ‘Fun Facts’ poster at home to demonstrate her knowledge of the koala and its habitat.

The Ace Space

We would also like to take this opportunity to publicly thank our Year 1 Support Teacher, Mrs Pam Collins, on behalf of both the teachers and families of the students she has worked with this year. Mrs Collins has worked tirelessly with many students both in The Ace Space and online throughout Remote Learning this year. Thank you Pam!

Thank You from the Year One Team

We would like to take this opportunity to again thank our Year One families for their overwhelming support through what has been another trying school year. We have been impressed with the overall resilience and persistence of the students as they navigated and pivoted from the classroom, to Remote Learning multiple times this year.

We can only hope that Year 2 will give the students their first school year free of COVID 19 disruptions! Well done to all our 2021 Year One children!

Mrs Horler, Miss Murnane, Ms Maddison, Mrs Werry & Mr Marashli (ably supported this year by Mrs Pam Collins, Mrs Jen Baird, Mrs Janine Nelson and Mrs Jenny Marashli).
