Coming soon to a Year 7 Humanities classroom near you!

Night at the Museum

The display case in W-block is looking empty, there’s quiet in the halls, something mysterious and historical must be coming……… It’s time for Night at the Museum!

Year 7 Humanities has just begun work on our final assessment for the year! Students will research an Ancient civilisation of their choice and create an artefact from that civilisation. As part of their CAT, they will also be making a timeline that compares different civilisations, and complete a poster that demonstrates the research skills they’ve been developing during the unit of work.

This fabulous Cartoosh was created by one of our Year 7 Students – Can you use the typewriter to decode his name?

Stay tuned for more amazing artefacts in the Year 7 Night at the Museum!

Warrandyte Police Reconciliation Event

On Tuesday 23rd November, DSC students, Shawana B. and Tarini W. of Year 8, participated in a community event that Indigenous community members have described as "a genuine effort towards reconciliation."

The pandemic has interrupted an immeasurable number of community events over the last 2 years. The test of any organisation's resilience in the current climate is making sure that we stay true to our priorities and find a way to make significant events happen. Warrandyte police sergeant, Stuart Henderson, and Victoria Police’s outer east Aboriginal liaison officer, Selina Grigos, brought together a truly memorable National flag raising ceremony as a symbol of Reconciliation with our First Nations People this week.

Manningham police Inspector, Luke Kirkton, said the display of the flags came following a statewide internal review which identified relationships with local Indigenous communities could be stronger.

It is about making sure whether they are a victim of crime or a suspect in crime, when they come to a police station, they will be respected and looked after while they’re there.
- Inspector Kirkton

Shawana B. and Tarini W. represented Doncaster Secondary College where they both had the honour of raising the National Flags.

After the event both Shawana and Tarini teamed up to write what they thought was special about the event:

  • It was the first time a Flag raising event like this had been organised at the police station as a symbol of reconciliation.
  • Having the opportunity to raise the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian flags.
  • We had the opportunity to speak with some high ranking police officers and other important guests who were very friendly.
  • After the ceremony there was a lunch which had bush tucker included.

My Kitchen Rules

(DSC edition)

On Wednesday the 24th November, MyBakery students participated in their very own My Kitchen Rules challenge.  Whilst working in teams students were given the challenge to design and produce a two course meal only using the ingredients provided. All groups performed extremely well and were able to create dishes that showcased their culinary skills.

MyCity Excursion

At last.... We're going to the zoo!!

On Wednesday November 17th, the two MyCity classes went on their first excursion to the Melbourne Zoo. We arranged for private buses to safely transport the students to the zoo.  The weather was fantastic. By the time we arrived, the sun was shining and all the students were ready to visit their favourite animals.

Students got a chance to visit many animals and exhibits. They walked around with their old and new friends in the MyCity classes. The MySelf program allows students the opportunity to make new friends. Students were a little nervous on their first excursion, however they slowly built their confidence navigating their way in an unfamiliar environment.

Well done to all students that enjoyed being in their new classroom for the day. This was such a great first excursion for all of us. We look forward to the other planed excursions on our city experiences in term 4.

Cyberbullying Incursion

On Friday 19th November, all year 8 students participated in the Optus Digital Thumbprint Incursion, (which has been endorsed by the eSafety Commissioner as a Trusted eSafety Provider). This remotely-run workshop taught students how to participate safely online, while providing them with the tools they need for positive, responsible and authentic experiences.

Students explored the importance of respectful relationships online through real life scenarios and were asked to consider the impact when interacting online. Our year 8 students discussed consent on line, image-based abuse and the tools they themselves have to positively support themselves and their peers. The key concepts that were covered were understanding the impact that actions have online and learning strategies they can seek to help themselves and others.

Thank-you year 8 for showing respect toward the presenter, your positive attitude to learning and engagement during this incursion.
