Are you a Friend or a Foe of our school environment?

The environment is something we should be considering all of the time. As everyone knows currently in the world, we are talking about the environment and global warming. Things like rubbish and plastic bags are a major environmental issue so when we see these items floating around the school, it needs to be all of our concern.

It is important that we as students inspire others for the future. You are the future generation. Clean up this rubbish and don’t be fooled by the laziness of others.

Did you know that littering is an actual criminal offence? Littering is punishable by an on-the- spot fine. Therefore, you know there is a public expectation that we deposit the rubbish in the correct receptacles such as a rubbish bin. Just think, if everyone did not use the bins and just threw rubbish on the ground, our school environment would be filled with smelly piled up rubbish, and a breeding ground for the diseases carried by rats and vermin.

Let's take pride in our surroundings and set a high standard for our school to adopt and maintain. Be proud of your school environment and recognise the role you play as an individual to maintain the standard.

So the question is...

What action should we take when we see someone not adhering to these principles?

Do we call them out and remind them of their obligations to keep our environment clean or do we walk away and do nothing? If we do nothing then in some ways, we are complicit in their inappropriate behaviour.

What we walk past is the standard we endorse. Charity starts at home. Home is school! Look after OUR school! Action speaks louder than words!

Dear DSC Staff,

What is the age of retirement?

Most people would say 65 years of age, others might say "I would like to retire at 50!"  But I want to tell you about two great icons I met recently. They are two great people that don't know what the age of retirement is!

I found these two amazing people to be both physically and mentally capable, continuing to perform daily tasks with energetic enthusiasm. They interact with people and they socialise with students all the time in their workplace. Through their efforts their age is an inspiration to others.

We are fortunate here at Doncaster Secondary College to have one of these amazing people as a highly dedicated member of staff: John Timms (aka Timmsy).

John Timms
John Timms

Timmsy probably won’t acknowledge this but he’s 83 years of age and he still works a 40-hour week. He’s an extremely proud man, keeping our school tidy and doing all the cleaning.

And here we have another incredible member of society: Daryl Cullen

'Dazza' is a Detective senior staff who also doesn’t know his age. He still thinks he’s 21 and he is still working all those hours, still keen, still dedicated, still very professional. When I spoke to him he told me he still loves going to work, enjoys the challenge of working with a great team in fighting crime and protecting society. Dazza is about to complete 48 years’ service to the community Victoria and he is about to venture onto long service leave. By the time Dazza retires from the Victoria Police, he will have served 49 and 1/2 years as an officer in charge of the Boroondara crime investigation unit. Dazza’s supervisors are inspired by his dedication, professionalism and his high levels of self-motivation.

So listen, age is not a barrier to your continued work. It’s never too old to keep on working and contribute in anyway to enjoy work. No age is the limit!

To conclude, I would like to quote a word of wisdom from each icon.

Do the crime do the time.
- Daryl Cullen

Make love not war.
- John Timms

P.S.: I would like to arrange a coffee meeting for my two icons but I need to make sure Dazza won’t arrest Timmsy first!
