Positive Climate for Learning

Grade 3/4 Learning Community

Over the last two weeks students right across the school have been involved in buddy lunches to begin preparation for 2022. Students have been enjoying lunch eating time outside with peers from their current year level and the year level above them. We recognise there has been a lot of change and uncertainty for children (and adults!) over the past two years. Talking and preparing students for this upcoming change will be of benefit.

In the 3/4 Learning Community we have had a focus on this during our PC4L sessions. Students have been exploring emotions attached to these transitions and how we can help ourselves and each other to feel supported and prepared for our new classes. During class time, students have been discussing strategies they can use to help them during these times. Here is what advice they would share…

Noah – sit next to them and be their friend (by asking them if they’d like to be friends) and I can eat lunch with them.

Olivia – other grade 3s will be going into grade 4 and you can focus on building friendships with them to help you feel comfortable.

Alyssa – You could talk to them, say hi and ask them questions about them. Like you could ask them their age, siblings and other questions about themselves.

Amaia – You could smile at people and be kind.

Jireh-John – I would show them around the community and help them feel like home.

You may notice your child experience some nervousness about upcoming change. Ways in which you could support your child at home include;

  • Allowing your child to talk about their feelings by asking questions or opening discussion opportunities
  • Plan a play date with a friend who they may have just made
  • Talk positively and confidently about starting a new grade
