Year 1 - 2021

Welcome to the 2021 school year!  We hope you had an enjoyable break! Please take the time to read the IMPORTANT information below to support your Year 1 child’s learning.

We also ask that you keep informed and action requests as they are posted to the Compass News Feed throughout the year.

SMART Spelling

To support our whole-school SMART Spelling (Michelle Hutchison) approach, your child will bring home a spelling sheet each Monday (commencing next week) with the words they have chosen. Please help your child to learn these words and their meanings throughout the week, in preparation for their spelling test each Friday.

Please remember to send the Spelling Book back every Friday.

Take Home Books

Commencing Monday 8 February, your child will be bringing home a book each day based on your child's reading ability. Take Home Books are designed to promote a love and enjoyment of reading and reinforce good reading practises learnt at school.

The expectation is that your child reads on a daily basis and brings their green reading folder to school every day so they can change their book.

Please record your child’s reading in the Home Journal to assist us in monitoring your child’s reading frequency and note the following:

  • It is important that your child reads their take home reader more than once to consolidate expression, fluency, pausing, self-correcting and their comprehension.
  • Your child should experience success reading these books and not find them too challenging. We want your child’s home reading to be a positive and enjoyable experience.
  • Remember to ask your child questions about the story and retell the story in his/her own words to enhance comprehension and get them thinking about what they are reading.
  • Encourage fluency and expression when oral reading.
  • Point out any punctuation that is missed and remind your child that the story will not make sense without it.
  • Discuss word meanings and talk about the story. Many children are good oral readers but are less strong with comprehension.
  • Read to your child on a regular basis to promote enjoyment and good reading habits.

Magic 100 Words

‘Magic Words’ can be found on Compass (School Documentation > Parents > Year 1 > Magic 100 Words). There are several staggered levels which collectively make up the ‘Magic 100 Words’. In Year One, the focus shifts from ‘reading’ Magic Words to being able to spell them. We would appreciate your assistance by helping your child learn the words together each day.

You might like to make games out of the words such as Bingo or Memory, try to find the words in Take Home Books or Library books, or practice writing them.

Wushka

In addition to our school reading  program BNPS subscribes to Wushka for our Prep - Year 2 students.  Wushka is a cloud based leveled reading program that students will access at school during Literacy sessions.

Students will also be able to access Wushka at home and read leveled books as well as completing a quiz after they have finished

reading.

Your students login details will be sent home in the coming weeks.

Mathseeds

This year BNPS has subscribed to Mathseeds for Prep - Year 2 students. ABC Mathseeds combines highly structured lessons with fun motivational elements that keep children engaged and keen to learn. Students will be accessing Mathseeds at school on a weekly basis.

Your child will also be able to login to Mathseeds at home. Login details will be sent home in the coming weeks.

Essential Assessment

An online differentiated and personalised assessment tool known as 'Essential Assessment' is used in Years 1 - 6 to deliver a whole school approach to formative and summative assessments in Maths. Essential Assessment is aligned with the curriculum and allows students to grow their knowledge at their own pace.

Curriculum/Units of Inquiry

Throughout the year students will explore six transdisciplinary themes, through Units of Inquiry. Mathematics and English require elements of explicit teaching but may also have a focus through inquiry. Humanities, Science, Health, Technologies and Civics are studied through inquiry learning. In the process the students will be challenged to explore, research, question, predict and solve problems. Inquiry engages students actively in their own learning.

Units of Inquiry will be posted on Compass along with 'Curriculum News' updates to keep you informed.

Specialist Programs

A timetable of your child's Specialist times has been posted on Compass, please ensure you have printed a copy and placed it in a visible area.  Please support your child and ensure they have the appropriate items on the correct day.

Information on our 2021 Specialist Programs (Japanese, PE, Art, Music and Library), including a timetable is available on Compass.

A ‘Specialist News’ update will also be provided each term via Compass.
