Diverse Academy Umpiring Program

Earlier this year a program was developed to increase participation amongst Shepparton’s diverse population in the sport of AFL, through umpiring.

Since the commencement of the Diverse Academy Umpiring program a group of students, made up of mostly Shepparton High School and Wanganui students, attended eight training sessions in total with the number of the group finishing at 17.

“It seemed to be growing every week” said Mark Lambourn the Football Development Manager for the Goulburn Murray region.

He also credited the kids and their commitment, for their attendance in every session.

Students commented on the highlights throughout the program including a visit from AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan, receiving training apparel, the opportunity to meet new people and learning new skills.

Last Saturday the team officiated their first real game of football between Shepparton Bears and Benalla U18 at Deakin Reserve.           Mark said they all did a fantastic job.

A number of students have decided to continue on with the Goulburn Valley Football Umpires

Association as boundary umpires. One girl has taken up goal umpiring on a regular Saturday afternoon. This is an incredible outcome and something that will hopefully continue to grow next year.

Shepparton High School students pictured include Brayden Cain, Tahlia, Sienna and Shelby Sleeth, Erkie Njiginya, Lavis Anania-Kibale, Jasmine Farren, David Ryan, Russell Vigil and Arielle Sutherland.
