Message from the principal

Dear parents and friends

All of you will agree that the ferocity of the bushfires which have ravaged  parts of Australia over the summer has left an indelible mark on the Australian community. Despite this, the response of so many has been inspiringly positive over recent weeks.

What Aussies do best in times of emergency and adversity is to pitch in and help, and it is in this context that JMSS is pooling its resources to do just that.

The Student Leaders have put in a huge amount of work, together with so many of their helpers, to organise a range of fun activities here at school in weeks 5 and 6 to raise money for Bushfire Relief. I congratulate and commend them on their initiative and hard work, and hope you would support your own sons and daughters to take full part in these.

I have also been in touch with Mr. Tim Cashmore, Principal of Mallacoota P-12 school, one of the regular participants in the annual regional exchange here. We have offered week-long homestays for any of their senior students to attend JMSS in either of the last two weeks of term one. As such we are seeking your help in offering one of these students a place at your home if you would like to take part.

The three-week Term Two Regional Exchange will still take place, but will be offered to all of the bush-fire affected schools in the east of Victoria first. The Term Three exchange will be offered state-wide as usual.

Again I would strongly recommend these programs to you and your sons and daughters. Many lasting friendships have been made over the years and these experiences at JMSS and at Monash have opened the eyes and minds of the keen young scientists who visit us, and demystify university and city life for many of them. I really look forward to your help with these programs
