Amanda Witt

Whilst I am now in my dream job, it was not always that way.  Upon leaving school, I wanted to be a secretary in a law office but despite getting interviews, I never quite got that job to get me to that next step.

Then I undertook some community work in a public library - two days a week for six months and realised I loved it.  I was not watching the clock and there was a variety of tasks - even if I did have to wash the coffee cups after each meeting!

I discovered my fine eye for detail with 13 digit book barcodes - finding previously thought to be lost books on the shelf, reducing this list from six pages down to two.

At the turn of the millennium, I enrolled in Swinburne TAFE's Library Technician Diploma course and completed two placements - one at Anglican Theological College, Ridley in the city, the second at the Prahran Mechanics Institute, a specialised local history library.

I now volunteer in two r libraries - the Community of the Holy Name in Cheltenham and the Carmelite Library in Middle Park. The latter has a rare books room with original duplicate copies of Latin works from the Vatican Library in Rome, some dating from the 16-1700's.

In 2016, the Victorian Recorder Guild approached me as they needed someone to oversee their music library and have been juggling that job whilst  covering a relief position at Scoresby Secondary College this year. I play the violin and viola and am a member of my local Frankston Community Orchestra.

Home life revolves around my ginger cat, gardening, reading, writing poems and stories.  I am currently enjoying making craft Christmas gifts for some friends.
