THE GREEN PAGE

Well done to the TEAM!
This edition of the Green Page could very well be the last our beloved 2017 Year 12 team members be a part of as they graduate soon and move out in the world onto bigger things.
Our team members being;
- Matthew Musilli
- Ollie Hackett
- Ualani Miller
- Taylor Fergus
I have trouble expressing the gratitude I have for this bunch of champions. They have gone above and beyond on countless occasions to make our school cleaner and greener. For me personally they have given me hope that the future will be a far more sustainable place to be knowing that they will be the generation that will lead us there.
The focus for the year has been initiating a recycling program at our school and build on the efforts made by Ualani in the previous year, no small task. We have met every Monday since the beginning of the year brainstorming initiatives and activities to raise funds and awareness to initiate the program.
There have been many achievements this year, but just to name a few they have;
- Reinstated the 4 council co-mingled recycling bins that were in the school already.
- Conducted a waste audit on VCE students over a week to estimate total waste for the whole school.
- Organised and conducted a meeting with the local MP Daniel Mulino, Mayor Yarra Ranges Cr Cliff and Project Advisor to Sustainability Victoria Simon Hum discussing a firmer stance on recycling in schools.
- Participated in ‘Plant a Tree Day’ where the team alongside the visiting VIP’s and Gardening Club planted a gum tree to raise awareness over the importance that trees play in our environment.
- Changed the current waste services policy at Yarra Ranges Council to better support schools in the shire to manage their waste.
- Designed and branded our own school’s ‘Keep Cups’ to help reduce the billion coffee cups that are sent to landfill each year. Produced a fantastic commercial to advertise and sell the cups. Also arranged a coffee van that actually accepts the cups!
- Held a stall at our Year 8 Wellbeing Day with games helping to introduce recycling in a fun way to other students.
- Sought and gained approval for an extra 8 council co-mingled recycling bins to be utilised across the school.
The team has created change at school and shire wide on the topic of recycling and should be incredibly proud of their achievements both small and large. We are all incredibly proud of what you have paved the way for. Good luck to you all for all your future endeavours.

The Recruit
The Green Team in all their efforts would love to see their legacy continue. Ollie has prepared a great document that you can share letting you know what the team is all about and details about meeting.

No matter what shape the Green Team takes next year, there’s no doubt enough commitment by the staff and students at our school to see us take a more ‘Green’ approach to everything we do.
Compost Building
Today, Friday 20 October, the Green Team in partnership with the Gardening club and led by Ms Street built a compost bin out of free pallets collected from the new Bunnings store opening in Lilydale.
The bin will be an example of how we can better manage our food scraps and will be collecting waste from our Food rooms and Reptile rooms.
Stay tuned for more photos and progress!
