Planning for 2018

Our staff team shared a highly productive day on Monday as we worked through our planning and direction for 2018.  There have been some hugely significant changes in our Literacy teaching and learning practices this year and our approach to creating a positive climate for learning in our classrooms.  We have measured the impact of these changes and seen improvement in our NAPLAN results, particularly in Year 3.  We are looking to continue this great work into 2018.  Our two key goals for 2018, as we focus on continually improving our practice, will be:

Literacy Goal: Embed the use of a broad range of evidence-based high impact strategies in their everyday practice, specifically in the area of literacy.

Positive Climate Goal: Implement a school wide positive behaviour support approach to define the schools vision and values, strengthen our positive climate for learning, and provide a context for incorporating High Impact Teaching Strategies

These two goals will be central to the work we will be doing as a school next year.  As we focus on continually improving student literacy outcomes we will be undertaking extensive professional learning as a staff and ensuring that we are using the best possible teaching strategies to support the learning needs of every single student in our school.  Alongside the classroom focus on Literacy, we will be taking the next steps in implementing our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support approach.  This will involve us establishing these values that we as a school community think are the most important for us to live by to ensure a positive climate for learning.  We are planning extensive community consultation as we develop our practices in this area, and we look forward to having your input next year.

Our approach for 2018 is summarised below...

Putting Faces on the Data

Another key activity that our staff have undertaken this year, has been link specific students to the data we collect on learning.  At our professional learning day this week we laid out photos of every student in the school on tables and arranged them to show the level to which each student was achieving. We identified those students making significant growth and discussed strategies for those who we identified as ready to benefit focussed support to encourage further growth.

If you have visited our staffroom this year, you may have noticed our Data Wall.  Every child in our school is represented by a pin that shows their reading level on one board and their spelling achievements on another.  This has been a hugely valuable tool for our staff as we reflect on the impact of our teaching and deepen our knowledge of the learning needs of each individual student in our school.

I am extremely impressed and exceptionally proud of the high level of knowledge and understanding that every member of staff here at KPS have of the students in their care.  Our staff know our students, they know how they learn, they know what they need to learn, and they know how to help them learn.  We have a knowledgeable, capable and professional staff team at Kilsyth Primary.  I am looking forward to celebrating our achievements as we close off 2017 and am excited about the opportunities 2018 will bring!!!
