The summit had a range of speakers such the COO of TATA Consultancy services, CIO of Jetstar, Founder of Indigenous Marathon Foundation, Chancellor of University of Queensland and many others including former Collingwood team captain Nick Maxwell. The main focus of their discussions was on IT, business and education.

The girls got to do a tour of the Collingwood Football Club, the same place where the 1956 Olympics were held. The tour was led by Nick Maxwell himself. This helped the girls gain knowledge on the team’s history.

The ConocoPhillips Science Experience

On the 18 to 20st of September a group of students from Year 9 and 10 went on a Science Experience to Swinburne University located in Wantirna.

Year 9-Raphael Delisavvas, Grace Garcia. Ethan Hallett, Jessica McDonald and Caroline Tran.

Year 10-Elliot Chhin, Bill Le and Manoj Mahesha.

The first day of the program was an introduction to:

Horticulture-with a focus on the science aspects of Horticulture including future technology and innovation. Eg growing plants in different soil types and different light situations

Lab Skills, Food and Drink, We wore white and coats and used laboratory techniques and equipment to test and modify food products eg making ricotta cheese

Photography-with a science and technology focus eg taking photos of an image – with different shutter speeds

Day two we adventured into the world of:

Agronomy and Food science-Explored the use of BRIX meters to test the sugar levels of fruits and vegetable.  This test aids scientists/farmers to know when the product is ready for harvesting

OzGrav Virtual Reality Experience-We explored the unseen phenomena of black holes and gravitational waves sing interactive apps and virtual reality experiences.  Students learnt how scientists see the unseen and roles Australian scientists are playing in these cutting edge discoveries.

Amazing Sphero-we played with simple block based coding.  Created a code for Sphero Robots to navigate a tricky maze.

Day three we were introduced to:

Internet of Things - We were introduced to Industry 4.0.  The Internet of Things and use Little Bits to create a doorbell circuit that will ‘Tweet’ a message to your phone.

mBots - we explored Arduino micro-processors and sued Scratch-based coding to program a mBot robot to light up and navigate pathways.

Drones - We learnt the rules of Drone flight.  They had to complete a small test to understand the laws around flying drones and their uses.  After completing the test they were able to fly and navigate the city (model-inside) obstacles to complete their mission.

A big thank you Swinburne University and the Young Scientists of Australia ambassadors and Noble Park/Keysborough Rotary Club-who paid for us to attend.
