The Tally Way

Where does confidence come from?
If I told you that you were good at something I’m going to guess that you wouldn’t believe me. In fact, if I told you 10 positive things and one negative thing I know which one you’ll focus on. It’s human nature.
We all want our kids to be confident people. We all want them to be able to do things better than we did or do. So how does this happen? What are the tricks and is there any one stop solutions? The answer is understanding what it means to have a 'Private Victory (Stephen Covey).
A Private Victory is when a person takes a quiet moment for themselves and reflects on what they have done. They can see the positives. They realise that what they did was good. They then articulate to themselves that they are proud (sounds silly I know but over 20 years of teaching experience I have seen the impact it can have on a child’s confidence).
In a nut shell - confidence comes from within! We can spend all day telling a child that they are amazing but experience tells us that doesn’t matter.
We must give our children the opportunity to celebrate their successes. We must allow them to be proud of what they have done. So, next time your child does something great, ask them “did you cheer for yourself”?
