Opening Mass

In our College Opening Mass we reflected on the story of the first disciples, called to start their lives anew, not on fishing boats on the Sea of Galilee, but as travellers spreading the word of God’s love on the dusty tracks of Palestine. This year, we too are called from our holidays, to start a new journey in a place that has chosen us and called us to a challenging commitment. Ours is the call to live as followers of Jesus Christ as we study, learn, teach, share, play, and live together in peace and understanding.
Our College Captains and House Captains were inducted with the help of their very proud parents and our Year 7 students had the opportunity to post a letter of their hopes and dreams to their Year 12 selves. At the end of the Mass, representatives from each Home Group processed out with a candle to be used each day in Home Groups during prayer, to remind us daily of the light of Christ showing us the way, helping us to Live God’s Message.
Thank you to Mrs Nora O'Donoghue and Mr Adam Cutler for their behind the scenes technical support and for the beautiful job Mrs O'Donoghue did of setting the environment for the Mass. The music was uplifting thanks to our amazing musicians and singers under the guidance of the very talented and encouraging Ms Rebecca Michel. A special thank you to Julia Adamcewicz and Imogen Oldaker for taking the lead to organise students to be the readers and in the offertory procession. Ms Mel Cramp and Mrs Trish Fellows prepared Year 7 so beautifully to process in with their letters. A fitting way to welcome them as our newest members of the college!
Finally, our Mass was celebrated with Fathers Wilf Plunkett and Bernie Thomas. Fr Bernie once again hit the nail on the head with his homily comparing starting at a new school with Arn Doh's experience in 'The Happiest Refugee'. Pope Francis has asked us to Live the Joy of the Gospel. Mater Dei Catholic College has certainly espoused that in our opening Mass. We pray that joy now filters into our everyday lives.
