Swimming Carnival team at Fitzroy Pool

Division Swimming Carnival

On Friday 11 March our NHS swim team competed in the Division Swimming Carnival at Fitzroy Swimming Pool.  Northcote High hosted the event and with Mr Bartholomew in charge with many helpers the day ran like clockwork.

Northcote was by far the largest team with 50 swimmers competing over a range of events throughout the day. Some of our senior team members also helped our Sports Captains and Peer Support, with marshalling and timing events when they weren’t competing.

Many of our students have now qualified to compete in the Regional Swim Meet at Watermarc on March 23. We wish them all well.

Thank you to all of our Sports Captains, Peer Support, our Swim Team and NHS staff members for all of their help to make this a truly successful and fun day.

Intermediate Volleyball

Last week we competed at the 9/10 volleyball day at Reservoir High! We had some high intensity games coming out with one win and two losses. Our Girls B team all combined well and showed fantastic teamwork. The boys A team made the final winning all their pool games and they won the final too. The boys B team also had success and won all of their matches throughout the day! Overall it was a very successful day and everyone had a great time. Special mention to Ms Hales, Ms Tait and our student coaches Amelia Mensingh, Alicia Chant, Jacqui Barlow and Fred Culham for helping on the day.

Intermediate Boys Division Tennis

On Tuesday 15th March 7 Boys played the best tennis I have seen in my life despite them coming third. The carry of the day was Nate who, when the boys where at a low point, provided snakes to fuel a brighter tomorrow. The top skilled players were Zeke and Asher who beat Dylan and Matt in a lunchtime match. A special shout out to Damian for being nice. I’m Asher Oakley and thanks for listening.

PS I did a tweener – just saying 😉

Intermediate Girls Division Tennis

Our 8 students had a great day out last Wednesday. Our A team won 28 games and lost 28 games showing improved skill and knowledge over the day. After losing to Lalor 11-16 they beat Thornbury 17-12. Our B team won against Thornbury B 21 -15. Our players learnt a lot on the day. Things like scoring, sportspersonship, tie breakers, bagging courts, playing Singles and Doubles and the rules of Tennis were all covered. Despite the showers it was a very productive and educational day.

Intermediate Regional Cricket

After making it through the regional stage, the year 9/10 boys cricket team played in a twenty-twenty final against Hume High School to see who would go through to the state championships. Hume started off well, hitting consecutive boundaries and lifting their score for the first 5 overs to 45 runs. Thomas Sweetman and Zac Henderson came in and both bowled extremely well, restricting the run-rate to about 3 an over while they were bowling. While one of the Hume players past 50, a wicket chance came with a beautiful catch behind the stumps by Will Doyle, securing our first wicket. From then on wickets started to fall left, right and center.  The team ended up taking 5 wickets in two overs off the bowling of Thomas Sweetman and Isaac Bartley. Keir Lucas and Lucas Gregory bowled out the innings extremely well, keeping Hume to a reasonable score of 162.

We entered the final 20 overs needing 163 runs to win. Finbar Kennedy got us off to a fantastic start hitting a quick fire 29 to get Northcote going. Thomas Sweetman came in at 3 and batted amazingly, hitting multiple sixes, 10 meters back past the boundary, his quick 44 got Northcote to 4 for 89 with 7 overs remaining. Needing a fightback from the lower order, Soul Stewart came out firing with a huge six off his second delivery faced. Duncan Mckie came out strong, smoking 27 off 4 overs. Both Austin and Toby Batted out the innings. Falling short by just 28 runs, the team put up a great fight.

All players should be congratulated for their contribution to the team.  Unfortunately, not all players were present for the presentation of the runner’s-up pennant.  We would like to thank Mr Giddy for taking the time to come and coach us on the few days we were off campus.
