VCAL News

Our Year 11 VCE and VCAL students participated in a workshop presented by FIT2DRIVE. FIT2DRIVE focuses on road safety education in keeping everyone safe from road trauma.

The Year 12’s participated in a series of presentations and workshops to encourage safe behaviours on the road when they get the chance to drive. They played games which focused on how easily distracted and difficult it is to do multiple things at once which when applied to driving could lead to dangerous situations.

Students then listened to two eye opening accounts from a member of Victoria Police and Fire Rescue Victoria. Many were stunned by the statistics and the stories people were sharing.

It was a real shock to the system to hear how serious and dangerous things can be due to reckless driving.

The Year 11 students were extremely polite and respectful.

Cultural Cooking

Flavour town came to visit the Year 12 VCAL classes!

Our Year 12 VCAL students had the opportunity to cook two different cultural cuisines with our Assistant Principal Ms. Jo Keating and Hindi teacher Ms. Aruna Malhotra.

Ms. Malhotra introduced Indian cuisine to our students, the students had the chance to make a dish called Mater Paneer with Jeera rice. It was the students first cultural cooking session and there were a few nerves as the dish was a little complicated. The students watched as Ms. Malhotra took charge of the demonstration and showcased the little tips and trick to enhance the flavour of the dish.

It wasn’t too long before the students had a go at making the dish from scratch. Many of them gave it a good go! The aroma of spices and curry filled the hallways of C Block and many students (as well as teachers) poked their head through the door to peek at what our Year 12 VCAL students were up to. It wasn’t long until stomachs started to rumble as the cooking neared a finish, many of the students quickly got a plate to serve up their Mater Paneer with Jeera rice. The Year 12 VCAL students surprised themselves with how well their cooking went and wanted to take home a recipe to make it at home.

In our second and final cooking session, Ms. Keating with much enthusiasm introduced Indonesian cuisine. Ms. Keating gave the students an in-depth presentation about her adventures in Indonesia. She told the students she had lived over there to practice and understand Indonesian culture. She brought in a lot of Indonesian cultural items to share with the students. The students got excited to cook their Indonesian dish, Mee Goreng that the sarongs that Ms. Keating brought in were being worn by the students – they were feeling very inspired that’s for sure!

Ms. Keating, or in Indonesia she would be known as ‘Bu Keating’ took the students on an adventurous cooking session with colourful vegetables and very spicy flavours to capture Indonesian-like flavours. The students watched closely as Bu Keating chopped and fried off the vegetables topped off with Ketchup Manis to balance the sweet, salty and spicy. The Year 12 VCAL students hurried off to their cooking stations to make their own Mee Goreng. It was a seemingly simple dish but the flavours involved were very complex. After two periods of intense cooking and the students were ready to eat their dish, many of them scoffed it down without giving it a second thought.

Bu Keating kindly donated some prizes such as a Mi Goreng tote bag and packets of Mi Goreng to the three best presented dishes, the winners were: 1st place – Ethan Jobson, Gavin Just, Tesloach Kuach and Josh Meaden, 2nd place – Nyamer Jang and Rosie Lalotoa and in 3rd place – Tj Solo.

We would like to take the time to thank Ms. Jo Keating, Ms. Aruna Malhotra and Ms. Melissa Howarth for volunteering their time in supporting and demonstrating the two different cultural cuisine cooks for our Year 12 VCAL students. Many of them enjoyed the chance to be outside of the normal classroom to apply hands-on learning as part of their Learning Task 3 on Cultural Cooking.

PACE

It was great to see some of the work students did in PACE last month; The shelves  for the Wellbeing centre were impressive and Kane is doing such a great job looking after the gardens.  Thanks for sharing Mr Tindal.
