Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

Term 1 is always a busy, action-packed time for schools and we are now in full swing with all our subjects, activities, excursions and learning opportunities for students.

Below is a quick summary of some key items in the past few weeks, as well as some upcoming items to be aware of.

We have created a new role at the college in 2022 which has a staff member have dedicated time to reviewing and revamping our House culture and competitions at the school.

Ms Veronica Thay will be working with students, staff and the community to build more House competition opportunities, as well as look at how we can reboot some strong House spirit at LSC!

Student Leadership positions

I am pleased to announce we have finalised our Student Leadership positions for 2022. A big thank you to Ms Simone Giulieri (Lead Teacher – Student Voice and Agency) for their work in this process. We look forward to announcing these leaders and presenting them with their badges shortly.

House Swimming Carnival and other House competitions

I am proud to be a member of Hale house, which took out the House Swimming Carnival on Friday 4th March. A big thank you to the organisers of the event, as well as all students who participated by attending, dressing in house colours, cheering on friends and positively representing our college. I also want to congratulate our students who moved onto the next stage for swimming where we experienced some great success. For more details, please check out the article later on in our newsletter

Positive Preconditions for Learning

As a school, we know that our students and staff are continuing to adjust from what were two years of uncertainty and interrupted learning for many. For our Year 9 students, their last year of uninterrupted learning was Grade 6, whilst for our Year 7 students, it was Grade 4. The adjustments to returning on site are experienced differently by everyone, with many finding the transition back to the routines and learning on site to be a challenge. For others, their areas or challenge may be in their social development, struggling to connect or reconnect with other people and learning. During this time, it is important we as a community work together to reset some key pre-conditions for learning.

So important is this work, that we have made this a large part of our wellbeing priority in our 2022 Annual Implementation Plan. This is critical to ensure that all our young people have the foundations in place so they can actively engage in their learning and have the best opportunities to learn whilst at school.

As a college, it is important we establish and explain what the fundamentals of effective pre-conditions for learning are. As a school, have done some work over the past few weeks to consider this concept and have determined that our young people show they are showing the basic requirements to be ready for learning when they are:

- Fully resourced for learning (including a fully stocked pencil case, books, textbooks and a laptop)

- Displaying positive behaviours for learning

- On time to each class

- In full school uniform

As a college community, we are targeting a couple of key areas over the course of the next couple of months to ensure that we have a clear, consistent approach for all students, staff and parents/carers. This will enable us to work together to re-establish these important pre-conditions.

Our initial priority areas are focused on all students knowing, understanding and following the Department Mobile Phone Policy, as well as ensuring all young people bring the basic equipment (a fully stocked pencil case and books) to every class. Further details about the focus on this can be found in the update within this newsletter, on Compass and via our social media. We ask that parents and carers read this information carefully and work with the school to support their young people to be fully resourced for learning.

Facilities Improvements

We are in the final stages of installation for our new perimeter fence. This provides added security and safety for our community and our site. As part of this process, we will also be updating our exterior signage, pedestrian walkways and parent/carer parking locations to ensure all members of our community can enter and exit the site effectively and safely.

Finally, we are pleased to announce that based on student and staff feedback regarding facilities improvements, we have commenced works on a brand-new synthetic turf volleyball court. This is located at the back of the college near the oval and will be a great active play space which I know many students (and staff) are extremely excited about. I look forward to a friendly staff versus students competition at the start of Term 2!

I thank all members of our LSC community for your ongoing support of our college, and our work in ensuring the best quality education opportunities for our young people.
