Textiles at St. Peter’s College

The Year 9 Textiles subject is titled ‘Fast Fashion’. This over-riding concept takes students on the journey of designing and making a hand-stitched pin cushion, sewing kit bag, Fast Fashion skirt, shorts or pyjama and then a sustainability project where an existing garment item, otherwise destined for landfill, is repurposed or refashioned to give it new life.

Students investigate what fast fashion is through individual research and industry case studies and the implications of this fashion trend on our communities and environment.

After working through each of the stages of the design process to create their own one-off Fast Fashion garment, students begin to realise what is involved for industry in mass-producing such items to meet consumer demand.

In continuing Textiles into Yr 10, greater emphasis is placed on design so that students are encouraged to work from a commercial pattern but to individualise it to the needs of a chosen client.

What the students have created will be on display later this year at the Annual Arts & Technology Exhibition so keep an eye out for the invitation!
