WELC Report

Message from the WELC Coordinator

- Ms. Carmela Santucci

WELC students have continued to participate in a variety of activities held at Westall.

On Tuesday 7th August, Westall College’s Athletics Day was held at Ross Reserve, Noble Park. All WELC students participated in various events. Preparation for the day took place during sport classes with a focus on participation and team building. It was great to see how students encouraged each other and worked together to improve their team’s skills. For some students this was the first time they have ever participated in an athletic event. It was a great day and there were many proud “Ribbon winning” moments.

It is now week six of Term 3 and students in the Language Centre are focussing on building and improving their English language skills. To keep progressing, all students must continue to complete their classwork, complete all their homework and revise the day’s learning.

Have you borrowed a book from the library? Reading is important in language learning and the library has many books and magazines of interest. I encourage all our students to visit the library and borrow books to take home to read.

Parent/Teacher interviews were held on Tuesday 21st August. The evening was well attended by students, their families and guardians. Students are always encouraged to attend the interviews as the conversations are valuable feedback on their progress. The Progress Reports are an indicator of the skill building and learning in the English language. During the interviews, teachers provide information about current levels in the English language, and strategies and actions to improve language skills.

Science Week Activity

To celebrate Science Week, WELC students all got together for a group activity.  The students were divided into eight groups of different classes and languages, and were set a task. Their challenge was to build the tallest tower they could that could hold an egg for ten seconds, but, they could only use drinking straws, a newspaper and sticky tape.

For half an hour, the students worked hard together to make their towers. They experimented with different ideas and created a variety of different designs for their towers, comparing the stability and height to other groups as they went.

Finally, it was time to test their structures so we went outside. There was a strong wind that added an extra challenge and meant that some teams' towers were not strong enough, causing a few smashed eggs. However, four groups were successful. The final winning team was Zoe, Bao, Porchee, Mioftu, Linda and Dan, whose tower was 63 cm tall!

Congratulations to the winning team but also to all the WELC students for participating. Everyone's enthusiasm, creativity and involvement made it a really great time for all.
