5/6 Class

Well it was a rapid-fire end of term and beginning of term 2. The 5/6 class have finished a unit on poetry based on our school and Harmony Day, written personal letters to their teacher regarding their thoughts on the classroom and what they would change/improve about the school and are now beginning a unit of work on 'The Kingdom Revealed' by Rob Ryan.

We are exploring Fractions Decimals Percentages in maths. Not to mention we've had visits from a World War 1 historian, prepared and performed speeches, began a STEM investigation into aeroplanes and testing, engineering and improving our own paper planes.  We also began an in-depth research project from Pretaurus Education and Landcare Boorowa regarding biodiversity in farms around the area. We thank Caitlin and Linda for their assistance with this project. Phew! What a busy time ahead!

Poetry -'Young and Free'   by Tamsyn

'There are people everywhere,

They may be dark or may be fair,

They may be young,

Or speak a different tongue.

They may be older,

Or a little bit bolder,

It doesn't matter,

Whether they're skinnier or fatter.

We should all unite,

Without any scary fight,

All come together and share,

We will forever spread our care.

We should all stand tall,

And knock down this accusing wall,

You are you and I am me,

Whatever that is, just let it be'.

STEM Investigation

The year 5/6 class have begun a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) unit of work called 'Up in the Air' where we will explore, create, test and improve paper planes based on the characteristics of real aeroplanes. The first stage was a huge success! Watch this space!

STEM Conference

For the first two days of term, Head Teacher of AMPS Andrew Corcoran and myself secured scholarships from the NSW Department of Education to attend a conference in the Hunter Valley on STEM. The conference was attended by 900 educators and professionals from around Australia, and included key note speakers such as Education Secretary Mark Scott, Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell, and media personality, author and maths genius Adam Spencer.

Andrew and I both attended workshops over the two days about projects to introduce to BCS over the year. Watch this space - exciting times ahead for all of our children here at BCS in this area.

Infants

Infants students have returned to school refreshed and ready to learn. Classes are busy picking up from where they left off last term in Literacy and Maths and focusing on new topics in Science, History, Geography and Creative Arts.

For the first part of this term all three classes will have a focus on Athletics during sport in preparation for the whole school athletics carnival in week 6 Friday 7th June. All infants students will participate in the first part of the carnival, age races and tabloids. Kindergarten, Year 1 and Yr 2 students who turn 7 this year will return to school at lunch time with Yr 2 students who turn 8 this year staying at the carnival with Miss Downey to participate in the full range of events.

Don’ t forget school photos this Monday 13th May, so hair tidy, shoes clean and full winter uniform please.

Our Kindergarten 2020 Information Night is being held on Monday 27th May. Please join us if you have a child who will be starting Kindergarten next year and let others you know about the night. It starts at 5.30pm in the Infants building moving to the Library at 6pm for a welcome from the Principal and presentation by Mrs Proudford.

Yr 1

Year 1 would like to welcome back all their friends, parents and carers to Term 2. We have had a busy and fun first 2 weeks settling into our new routines after being reunited as a grade. We have been working on reciprocal reading; reading to our friends in class and once a week working with Year 5 to practice new vocabulary and our fluency. Year 1 has also started  new units on Australiana and Living things which will be included in our Literacy, Science and Geography this term.

Personally, I would like to thank families, staff and students for all their kindness and support as I transition into this new position at BCS. I am proud to be able to see my new class grow together as they all work hard and support each other in their learning and out in the playground.
