Careers Expo

'On Tuesday 30th April years 9 to 12 had the privilege to visit Young High School and TAFE for the day. When we got there we were greeted by a student from Young High who was our guide for a tour of the TAFE facilities.  We first went to the Automotive section, then moved on to the Early Learning Centre and lastly we were escorted through the Beauty section of TAFE.  As we finished exploring the TAFE we were lead into the school’s gymnasium where various apprenticeship groups, employers and universities were gathered to answer our questions that we had about our future job interests. They offered a lot of information about courses and degrees for University and heaps of advice was available regarding apprenticeships.

We all had a fantastic day and would like to thank Mrs Poplin, Mr Keighley and Mrs Corcoran for organising this experience for us.  Thank you to Young High School and Young TAFE for including us in this awesome day and for the sponsorship our school received that allowed the bus cost to be kept extremely low'.

World War 1 Living History Incursion

On Tuesday, we had History organisation ‘WW1 Living History’ come and visit the school. The aim of this organisation is to keep the memory of those who were involved in the First World War alive. As we have recently commemorated ANZAC Day, it was timely for students learn about the nature of warfare and Australia’s involvement in WW1.

Throughout the day, there were several  “display and discussion” sessions that were delivered to Years 5 to 12. During these sessions, students learnt about life in the trenches, what soldiers wore and weapons they used. They were able to see and touch replica and real artefacts from the war as well as reenact a range of scenarios. Presenter Shane Blackman told stories about war based on words from diary entries and letters soldiers sent home. Additionally, he made the discussions relevant to modern society by bringing in PTSD and explaining how kids today are desensitised to violence. Shane drove home the message that the soldiers who went to war were real people who experienced real atrocities.

Thank you to Shane who was highly engaging and effective in educating our students.

Concreting in Construction

On the last day of Term 1, Yr 11 and Yr 12 Construction classes came together to lay a slab of concrete outside the storage shed.

We started surveying the site earlier in the term. Once the surveying job was done we then had to excavate the area, lay form work, plastic and reinforcing mesh. Finally we could start concreting! The students all worked well mixing the aggregate and cement, pouring it into the excavated area and bull floating it.

This term we did a big clean up of the area and now we have a beautiful new slab.

Well done Construction students!

Visual Arts

Year 11 Visual Arts students studied the Postmodern Frame during Term 1.  Through the Postmodern Frame we look at examples of Fine Art and considered factors including appropriation, recontextualisation and making something old new again and more relevant to this time. Using the style of Australian Mambo artist Reg Mombassa the students took an old artwork and changed it to suit the Mambo style and a more relevant theme for our time. Pictured are  the students Postmodern paintings and the original artworks the have appropriated and recontextualised.
