Year 5 News

Wow, what a term. Term 3 has felt like a non-stop roller coaster of events. We are extremely proud of all the Year 5 students for the continuous commitment and dedication to their learning and all the extra activities we participated in.

Inquiry

As a provocation for our Unit of Inquiry, How We Organise Ourselves, the Year 5 and 6 students and teachers teamed up to experience four different styles of government: democracy, anarchy, dictatorship and communism. Rotating through four rooms, students were exposed to what life would be like under a certain government system.

The students were given a single instruction at the start of the activity, draw a picture in each room you attend. Without knowing what was ahead, each group were confronted with two teachers behaving the way a leader would act if they were part of the specific style.

Once we concluded our provocation, Year 5's followed up with a reflection on how each experience had made them feel. Feedback from students was they definitely would not like to live under a dictatorship or anarchy system!

Parliament Incursion

After being postponed, the students were able to experience the Parliament Process incursion by Linked Incursions. The day was split into 3 sessions. The session began with an interactive activity on preferential voting. Six students were chosen to run for prime minister, with an allocated speech and party to represent. The class were then directed on the voting system and they had to vote for their preferred party.

Once a leader was elected, the students became members of the government and the opposition, re-enacting the process of passing a bill through the House of Representatives. The proposed law was to ban P.E. in schools.

It was amazing to see the Year 5's take responsibility and argue their points for or against the new law.

Bike Ed

The students put their riding skills to the test in this year's Bike Education program. Thanks to the help from Mr Farmer and Mr Arnold, the Year 5s learnt important road safety rules. Adding on from what they learnt last year, the children were instructed to do left and right hand turns, approach roundabouts and travel along the surrounding streets of our school.

Book Week

BNPS felt like a fairytale come to life with the students dressing up as characters from a wide range of picture books and novels. As the seniors of the school, it was great to see the Year 5s go to as much effort to celebrate the world of literature.

Prep Buddy Activity

It is always lovely to see the Year 5's and Preps come together. While our 2023 Prep students were having their Transition Session, our current Preps worked with their Year 5 buddies to create a memorial of their time together in 2022.

The Prep and Year 5 teachers were extremely proud of the children on the way they conducted themselves during the morning.

We hope that everyone has a well-deserved break. We look forward to seeing everyone in Term 4 for our final term for Year 5.
