Book Week 2022 – Dreaming with eyes open

During Book Week the Year 2 students completed a rotation and studied four shortlisted books and completed four activities with the teachers.  My Bray studied Stellarphant by James Foley. Mrs Demetriou studied Iceberg by Jess Racklyeft. Mrs Purton studied Walk of the Whales by Nick Bland and Mrs Smith studied Just One Bee by Margrete Lamond and Anthony Bertini.

Stellarphant

Mr Bray read the fantastic book called Stellarphant. It’s a story about an elephant who wanted to become an astronaut. Unfortunately Stellar is told that elephants can’t become astronauts because they are too big, they haven’t been trained, they won’t fit in the rocket and many other reasons. But Stellar doesn’t give up and she overcomes every hurdle that is put in her way. Eventually, she can follow her dream to become the first Elephant Astronaut.

The book’s message of following your dreams and not giving up was reinforced when students got to complete an activity of them following their dreams. We had many professional sports people, zookeepers, vets, doctors and even some astronauts.

Iceberg

During Book Week the Year 2 students read the story ‘Iceberg' by Claire Saxby and Illustrated by Jess Racklyeft.  This story is a visual masterpiece that focusses on the final freeze of an Antarctic winter with beautiful illustrations depicting all the underwater marine life. The story sparked curiosity about Antartica and its flora and fauna which led to a discussion about the importance of protecting this fragile continent.

At the conclusion of the story and discussion, students created their own Antartica themed bookmarks that featured Penguins.

Walk of the Whales

When all the whales in the ocean leave their home to walk around on land, people don’t quite know what to think. But soon shopkeepers go out of business, farms are flooded with water and salt, and people shout horrible, anti-whale words. That is, until a smart little girl decides to ask the whales what everyone can do to help. Once everyone helps clean up the ocean and get rid of all the rubbish, the whales head back to their home.

The students enjoyed making a happy pop-up whale coming out of the clean ocean once all the rubbish was tidied up.

Just One Bee

Just One Bee is a story of hope, determination and never giving up: the story of one - bee and her dream to revert desolate wastes back to fields of flowers.

After reading the story the students worked together like ‘busy little bees’ to create a beautiful garden of their own, a magnificent field of flowers.

Book Week Parade 2022

It was wonderful to all the students dressed in their Book Week costumes for our parade on Monday 5 September. They enjoyed parading around in front of all the other classes and showing off their costumes. The students loved seeing all the staff dressed in their Book Week costumes also.

Year 2 Minibeast Exhibition

As a celebration of the end of our current unit of inquiry, Sharing the Planet the Year 2 students had a minibeast exhibition last Tuesday.

The students where very excited to set up their tables ready for the classes and their families to come and view their amazing work. The students completed an information poster on their chosen minibeast researching their physical features, habitat, diet, fun facts and drawing their minibeast lifecycle and a labelled diagram. The students also enjoyed making a model of their minibeast using craft supplies.

Finally, they completed a PowerPoint on their chosen minibeast complete with 5 slides. They also learnt how to insert pictures, video and record their voices.

We were extremely proud of our student’s effort in completing the various phases in preparation for ourminibeast exhibition. We would like to thank the staff, students and families that visited our very successful exhibition.

Year 2 Dress Up Day & Movie

Yesterday the Year 2 students had a dress up and movie day to complete our unit of inquiry on Sharing the Planet.

All the students and teachers enjoyed dressing up as a minibeast. The students started the day completing a guided Art Hub drawing of a minibeast on the laptops. We then enjoyed relaxing on beanbags and pillows while we watched the movie, A Bugs Life. The students all bought a yummy lunch and a treat to enjoy throughout the day.

We have had a fabulous term of learning and are so proud of our students' achievements. The students thoroughly enjoyed completing our Sharing the Planet unit and have gained a great deal of knowledge about a variety of minibeasts.

We are looking forward to 4th term and the many activities we have already planned for the two units of inquiry we will study.  We hope you all have a wonderful holiday and time to recharge and spend time with family.

Thank you for your ongoing support.
