Year  9 explore the moon and the sun

Light and Waves

Mr Dixon's Year 9 Science class got to use the very impressive Dobsonian reflector telescope, during one of their lessons last week. The students took the Dobsonian telescope onto the oval to observe the sun and the moon, which were both in the sky at the same time. The Dobsonian telescope was designed in the 1960's and is an incredibly good light gatherer, which allowed students to see impressive sun spots on the sun. The Year 9 students have studied sun spots in class, which are dark cold patches on the sun and are not visible to the naked eye.

This allowed the students to use field equipment to observe something that they would only normally see in their textbooks. The Year 9 science students have been doing a unit on light and waves.
