Around the Traps - Foundation/1

Diana Rinaldi / Bianca Vescio

Welcome and congratulations to the Foundation and Grade One students. They have all done a great job starting their school year and settling into the routines at St Joseph’s. A big thank you to our wonderful buddies for all their help with the Foundation students!

Literacy

Students have been starting the day with different literacy activities to help them feel comfortable in the classroom and to start working with one another. We have focused on some stories to help with building friendships and making good choices in the classroom. After reading the story Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley, students discussed what being a good friend looks like. Here are some responses from our writing lesson…

Leo B

I am a good friend because I speak nicely.

Eliot

I am a good friend because I share everything.

Eve

I am a good friend because I help people when they need it.

Annabelle

I am a good friend because I am kind.

Joe

I am a good friend because I don’t ignore people.

Maths

Foundation

In Maths we have been exploring numbers and become experts in recognising the numbers to 10 and counting collections.

Grade One

Grade One students have begun the year by playing a few different numeracy games. We have played a wonderful game called ‘Race to Ten’ where students are racing to get to ten before their partner does. They have very much enjoyed playing a ‘Beat the Teacher’ version of the game. We have also started talking about the most efficient way to count a group of items; sorting them out in lines, pointing to each object, counting one by one and skip counting.

Inquiry

Students have begun learning about their new Inquiry unit, ‘Growing Older and Wiser’. We have begun thinking about how all living things change over time. As a follow up we created our very own timelines of the milestones we have as we grow from birth to 2 years old!

RE

Foundation and Grade One students have started learning about St Brigid, who she was, why she is important and the symbols we know her by. We have been able to link this to our work on sharing and friendship, as St Brigid was someone who cared for the poor and was always sharing with those in need. Students have also made their very own puppets of St Brigid.
