TWILIGHT SPORTS

CARNIVAL 2022

THURS MARCH 10

Dear Parents,

Each year the school holds a fun social evening called Twilight Sports. This sports carnival is designed to be a fun family event when the whole school community can come together and celebrate the beginning of a new school year. In keeping with this philosophy many of the activities are non-competitive and focus on fun participation for all. This year’s event is to be held on Thursday 10th March, 2022 at Catholic Ladies College Eltham. Last year Twilight Sports was one of the only whole school social functions we managed to have for the year! We will obviously be working on keeping social distances where possible but it is a lovely big outdoor space with plenty of room for adults to spread out.

As always the Junior School (Prep-2) Field events will commence at 4.30 pm and the Senior School children will join them for track events at 5.30 pm. The running events will conclude at approximately 6.30 pm at which time the Juniors will be finished for the evening. We will then hold the Senior School field events which should finish at approximately 7.30 pm which will be the conclusion to our Twilight Sports Carnival.

As we wish to start Junior school events at 4.30 pm we request that all Prep-2 children and house captains arrive at CLC at 4.15 pm (not too much earlier as we need to wait for the CLC pick-up traffic to clear) and be brought to the marshalling area where they will be organised into house groups. CLC have asked that we park all vehicles in the lower car park on the left of the main driveway, so as not to cause too much congestion around the school buildings when they will still have a number of their own students being picked up. You will then walk across the driveway and down past the gym and tennis courts to the oval.

The children will gather in house groups, then take part as a house team in a variety of sporting and fun activities, which the parents will be most welcome to move around and watch or even join in.  The year 3-6 students are required to arrive by 5.15 pm and go to the marshalling area where they will be organised for the sprint and relay events.  At 5.30pm the Juniors will move from the field events and join the Seniors for the sprints and the relay events. The school and house captains are required to come along and help conduct the events for the juniors as part of their leadership roles. It is important that all students arrive on time so events can commence promptly helping to ensure that the carnival can be completed on schedule.

The children will come to school on this day at the usual time and take part in normal classes until 1.00pm. At this point in time we encourage parents to come and pick up their children between 1.00pm and 1.10pm which then allows us to send most of our staff to CLC to start setting up. Children being picked up will need to be signed out from their class rooms prior to 1.10pm and cannot walk out to cars unsupervised. Children cannot walk home from school prior to the 3.15pm normal finish time. We understand that some parents will be unable collect their children early and arrangements will be made for the supervision of the remaining students until the regular finishing time. The after school care program will run as usual.

As mentioned earlier, parents are welcome to move around the field watching the field events but I ask that once the children move to the running track all spectators should move outside the roped off area and watch the sprints from the spectator areas behind the children. This is to ensure that all the children have the best view possible.

The PFOL will be selling food and drinks and we know some families will be bringing along dinner. We ask that after the children are marshalled into their house groups that no food or drink be brought to them. The Junior School children will have the opportunity after 6.30 pm to have their dinner while the Senior School children will be able to eat either before 5.30 pm or after 7.30 pm. As always families are welcome to bring along a picnic basket, a rug, and camp chairs and turn the evening into the biggest school community social event of the past 3 years! As always, the PFOL will need plenty of volunteers to run the BBQ!

On the night the children are invited to wear a t-shirt in their house colour with their normal school sports shorts. Those that don’t have something don’t need to worry as we have plenty colour bibs for each house that will be available on the night. Keep in mind that at this time of the year the nights can get cool quickly, so it may be wise to have a warm jacket handy. If my long history of bringing extremes of weather for this event rears its head again (too much heat or too much rain!) a decision on cancelling this event will be made on the Wednesday with families being informed by note at the end of the day.

More information will be coming out over the next couple of days so keep your eyes open for an Operoo form. I look forward to seeing you at the sports.
