Year 8 Stem Projects

Year 8 have started to create some STEM projects within their Math's classes. STEM includes Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to solve problems and find solutions. This fits well with the Math's syllabus for Working Mathematically and the students generally find it interesting. Recently they have created boats using aluminium foil, coffee filters and skewers and students tested their ability to hold weight and speed moving through water. They are currently working on making mazes using paper plates and paddle pop sticks with an aim to create the longest maze.
This week saw the Maths Department celebrate a Mathematical date which is both a palindrome (read backwards and forwards) and an ambigram (read upside down). This was Tuesday 22.02.2022 and we celebrated by wearing tutus (twotwos) to mark the occasion. This stimulated a lot of discussion around palindromic numbers. This is the last date in the format of dd.mm.yyyy in this decade that will be a palindrome, the next will be 03.02.2030.
