Eddie Rice Hours

Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 will be provided with a number of opportunities throughout the year to participate in social outreach initiatives that have now been called “Eddie Rice Hours”. By this, students volunteer to work in the community helping those in need, in many cases those who exist on the margins. Mr Balboa has corresponded with students via email explaining these opportunities and students are more than welcome to participate or in some cases organise their own Eddie Rice Hours. As has been explained at year meetings, if students wish to organise their own hours, they should consider those who are being helped as opposed to the task they complete. This program is more than simply volunteering. It is an undertaking to emulate the work of, and bring to life, the spirituality of Blessed Edmund Rice, someone who worked with those on the margins.

Our weekly visits to the Matthew Talbot Hostel commenced last week with a group of students volunteering to work in the homeless shelter for men. The hostel is located in Woolloomooloo.  Students travel there after school to serve for the evening meal and then clean afterwards. Year groups will be advised via email regarding when and how to sign up if they wish to participate.

During the school holidays, opportunities will be made available for students to volunteer for the Solidarity Program at Centacare. Centacare is a working factory that provides meaningful employment for adults with severe intellectual disabilities. Young men of St Pius X have thoroughly enjoyed their time with the employees at Centacare and we will look to continue this relationship in 2022.

Commencement Mass

Much organisation and planning have gone into the Commencement Mass for 2022. In this, the 85th year of St Pius X College, we will officially open the school year by celebrating the Eucharist, led by old boy Bishop Peter Ingham (Class of ’55).

We have much to celebrate in 2022, a year where we will be guided by our theme of “Opportunity and Growth”, where the young men will be challenged to “Aspire to Inspire”.

photos of our celebration will be published in next week's Woodchatta.
