Milk the old-fashioned 'whey'

We are excited to share that we have recently introduced The Udder Way milk dispensing system in Murphy's Café, which will see plastic milk bottles become a thing of the past at St Mary's College.

The new technology means we will be contributing to a much more sustainable and environmentally friendly way of using and selling milk products to our school community.

The system, which is developed around an 18-litre capacity keg, stores and dispenses milk from an installed tap, ensuring fresh and free-flowing milk without the waste and clutter involved with conventional plastic milk bottles.

Did you know that only 50 per cent of milk bottles are actually recycled?

By eliminating the use of plastic milk bottles in our Café, we can expect to save up to 3000 two-litre bottles in one year—that's a lot of milk, and a lot less waste sent to landfill.

Every one Udder Way keg can save up to 7000 bottles from the supply chain. It can be used 800 times before being recycled and has a lifespan of approximately 10 years. Read more about the Tasmanian designed and manufactured technology here.

St Mary's College students and staff are invited to purchase a reusable glass bottle of their own, available in two sizes, two-litres or 750ml, or they can bring their own bespoke bottle to fill up at the Café at the end of each day to take home and enjoy.

Well done to Murphy's Café Manager and College Sustainability Officer, Phil Shanny and the Murphy's team for an 'udderly' fantastic initiative.

Mothers showered with love

Bad weather didn't dampen spirits at the Year 12 Mother's Day Breakfast.
Bad weather didn't dampen spirits at the Year 12 Mother's Day Breakfast.

Batten down the hatches! Not even an early morning storm could put a stop to the Year 12 Mother's Day Breakfast on Friday 6 May.

The breakfast was a lovely opportunity for our Year 12s to show their appreciation for, and spend some quality time with, their mothers, grandmothers, carers and friends over a hot cuppa and plate of croissants and fresh fruit.

With an auction and quiz giving guests the chance to show off their competitive side, the event was hailed a great success, raising funds for our Prefects' chosen charity, SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY

Thank you to all who braved the wet weather to attend the breakfast and to the Year 12 Prefects for organising the event.

We also thank all businesses and individuals who donated items to the auction and for their support.

Our Kinder students also had the chance to spoil their mothers and the special women in their lives with an afternoon tea on Thursday 12 May featuring all the essential ingredients—big smiles, tasty treats and lots of fun indoor and outdoor play.

Shining a light on Nano

On Thursday 5 May, we gathered as a College to celebrate our annual Nagle Mass, held in honour of the life and legacy of Nano Nagle.

As the founder of the Presentation Sisters, Nano has been an inspiration to St Mary's staff and students since our school's foundation in 1868.

We strive to live with hospitality, compassion and simplicity, just as Nano did in 18th century Ireland.

Love one another as you have hitherto done.

You can learn more about Nano by visiting the Presentation Sisters' website here

Following Mass, students flocked to the College Green for icy poles and to participate in a coin line to raise money for the Presentation Sisters in the Philippines.
